Great trade IMO. We basically get, for a cheaper price, a younger Petry entering the prime years for a defenseman. Petry going to be 35 year-old next season, and his contract was toxic to us and the rest of the league. Regarding Poehling, he was never going to be more than a 3C/4C player. Montreal is loaded at Cs for the future with Suzuki, Dach, Dubois (will end up with us one way or another), and our earliest 1st pick in 2023. Even Beck will struggle to find a spot on this team.

Matheson will play great for us for a couple of years, and will then be traded (for a decent return) when some of our young Ds are ready for more responsibilities.

This is as good as it get in this market. The trade deadline would not have magically increase Petry's value. It's more probable that Petry may have become even more difficult to trade if he takes a step back.

To all the people looking at his advance stats saying hes a younger Petry are gonna be disappinted when they see his Marc Andre Bergeron level defence. He doesnt quarter back the powerplay or penalty kill, he got sheltered on the second pairing and i would wait to look at the advance stats after next season. Pretty disappointed in this trade but will quickly move on and hope the best for the next one!

Neither does Petry - whose been brutal on the PP his entire career

They’re both PMD who are most effective when they use their strength… skating

...and if he bombs then he does...no one, I can't imagine, is expecting Swedish Jesus-level numbers, however he is much more serviceable than he's being credited with in here...

...remember where Petry was when we got him...his age...his ability...his contract...light bulb going off yet??...:dunno:
So you should be saying he COULD be a left handed Petry, HE IS NOT A LEFTHANDED PETRY FROM WHAT HES SHOWN. I also love how you’re being so condescending acting like every dman that turns 28 explode when it’s so rare that a guy like Petry breaks out at this age. Matheson isn’t a bad player but I would have preferred keeping Petry on retaining on him to get picks if this is the best we could do. Matheson a contract isn’t good.

Let’s stop with this “left handed Petry” crap. Petry had 4 consecutive 40+ point seasons before this year which was in rare company. Matheson has a career high of 31.
how about you go on hockeydb and look at Petry stats at 28yo. Career high 25 points.

I don't think Matheson becomes attractive at the deadline only when he's a UFA. I think his contract is a good value deal, and he could sought after at the deadline as early as next season.

It would require the Canadiens taking back something undersireable from a contender, but that would only sweeten whatever else they may get offered.

I don't think he'd be on the move this year, but by next March, I think Hughes might have a choice to make.
And replaced by what/whom? Again, I think fans think we are early rebuild, I believe Hughes see the team as late rebuild. As he should, we have a ton of prospects, an emerging core, and two first next year still, two of which may be high. You can only carry so many picks and prospects so trading Matheson for picks and then using picks or cap to replace him doesn't make much sense. We aren't going to dress 4 or 5 rookie dmen.

Gorton is applying the same rebuild strategy as he did w NYR.

Next up Trouba acquisition equivalent … PLD

Pens fan here. Matheson had his best season of his career last year. Really put it together.

Sometimes he makes baffling decisions with and without the puck and he'll occasionally make crushingly annoying mistakes. However, he is also amazingly talented and will do some jaw dropping skating plays sometimes. Overall, he cleaned up a lot of the mistakes this past season and was really a solid dman overall for us.

Excited to see what Petry can do. Hopefully he has gas left in the tank.

Trade isn’t really that bad.

Matheson will have value down the road should be able to flip him
I’m sure our defence coach on top of the MSL Factor, will bring him to the next level.

Wait, what? There is no defence coach?!? :sarcasm:

...no, I'm not speaking in absolutes, you are and have been in this thread since your first post...I'm saying his career so far is eerily similar to Petry's and that he's being sorely underrated and slandered in this thread...I could give a rat's arse if I'm not coming across passive enough for your delicate sensibilities...

That’s more or less the way I see it, sorry if you disagree.
Even if that were the case would you rather have an anglo GM or the an incompetent Francophone at the helm? I don't know about you but I'd rather have someone competant rebuilding the team regardless of what language he speaks.

What cap dump when he got the second most points and the most goals on that D brigade while being 28 years old? Give me a break...
Yup for every year besides this year. A Petry for Matheson base always made sense to me as I’ve proposed it, but we should have gotten something more than a 4th. Let’s stop pretending that this guy is guaranteed to put up Petry like numbers and that his best season is a better representation of who he is than ALL his other seasons.

Lol I remember when Kulak was a Petry clone and now Matheson. Everyone is on the verge of becoming a top pairing at 28 years old despite what they have done previously according to you lmao.

Their cap dump was Marino.
They got a guy who had an incredible rookie year last year in return. That’s not a cap dump return.
