Pens fan here. Matheson had his best season of his career last year. Really put it together.

Sometimes he makes baffling decisions with and without the puck and he'll occasionally make crushingly annoying mistakes. However, he is also amazingly talented and will do some jaw dropping skating plays sometimes. Overall, he cleaned up a lot of the mistakes this past season and was really a solid dman overall for us.

Excited to see what Petry can do. Hopefully he has gas left in the tank.
He has gas and fire left in the tank. Just needs a change of a scenery. He’s a .05 ppg dman and will do well behind Letang. Poehling is a 3rd/4th C

You need a Eddy or Lindell type to pair him with to get the best results IMO.

Gorton is applying the same rebuild strategy as he did w NYR.

Next up Trouba acquisition equivalent … PLD
Agreed, we just picked 1st and have a full cupboard of prospects and future picks. I think the team will be bad next year, bottom 10, but don't see any scenario where they dress plugs to try and lose. That would be terrible for the culture, I hope they put these young guys in a position to succeed even if it means missing out on Bedard. And really, this team won't be able to out tank ARZ or CHI so why install a losing culture when you can lose gracefully.

Petry turns 35 this season at 6.25 mil for 3 seasons.
Matheson is 6 years younger, skate just as well and is entering his prime.
this is true and it s the small thing I am clinging to that he can take a bigger role and still increase his production on the Habs blueline. Likely won't maybe who knows, MSL has worked some offensive magic with others last season.

Honestly this sounds identical to Petry. When he’s on, he’s a top offensive D. When he’s off, he’s easily one of the dumbest players in the whole league and makes costly mistakes

Even if both Yotes and Hawks tank only one of them will have a whopping 25% chance at Bedard with the other @ 10%

Lol I remember when Kulak was a Petry clone and now Matheson. Everyone is on the verge of becoming a top pairing at 28 years old despite what they have done previously according to you lmao.

They got a guy who had an incredible rookie year last year in return. That’s not a cap dump return.

I don't think you saw Smith if you thought he had an incredible rookie year. He doesn't defend at an NHL level, he's brutal without PP minutes.

Petry only really started to show his top potential around the age of 28.

Kulak is and Matheson is 28. You’re premature with your evaluation. Wait a little while longer. You may be right or wrong

Matheson isn't that bad, he's fun to watch if nothing else. He'll go to coast to coast to score a goal and you'll be like "which forward was that?!" He's a fantastic skater. His defense leaves something to be desired for sure, but he's not a total disaster either.

What I don't get is Hughes saying Matheson's game will be benefit more playing under MSL. Sullivan's system is basically a perfect fit for someone with Matheson's skillset, what he did last year is about the most you can hope for from him. Probably just a random GM platitude about a newly acquired player.

...and if he bombs then he does...no one, I can't imagine, is expecting Swedish Jesus-level numbers, however he is much more serviceable than he's being credited with in here...
More about the trade itself. I would have rather given up a 2nd round pick and cleared the salary if possible than take a longer contract back. To me matheson is a kulak level player. Third role eats up even strength minutes. You pay these defenceman 2 to 3 mil

Hughes on Matheson: 'Mike is a five-star human being'

The Canadiens' GM spoke glowingly about the new acquisition from the Penguins

that's nice but has is he as a hockey player?

Even Hughes seems to express that he is not as good a dman as Petry and does bring a lot of what Petry did

Hughes on acquiring a veteran blueliner to replace Petry:

In any trade that we were going to contemplate with Pittsburgh or any other team that involved Jeff Petry, one of the elements that had to either come in the trade or we had to be able to thereafter acquire was a defenseman. Mike Matheson is a defenseman who was playing top-4 minutes in Pittsburgh that brings a lot of the qualities that we lose in a Jeff Petry in terms of his ability to transport the puck. Last season, Mike was in the 90th percentile for goals in the NHL at 5-on-5 per 60 minutes. He was 85th percentile in points. He scored five game-winning goals, and almost all of his offensive production came at even-strength. I also know him as an individual. I feel really comfortable that Mike is the kind of person in our locker room, at this point in his career, that can assist our young players, be it the draft picks like Juraj Slafkovsky or our young defensemen that are trying to make their way as regular NHL players. Mike is a five-star human being who can be of great assistance to our club.

As it stands he'll likely play with Marcus Pettersson. MP is a very steady defenseman so should be good if they have any chemistry.

Don’t pair him with a younger guy that needs developed, maturity, and sheltering.

Petry don’t have good sample of carrying his partner.

Other than that, he does have gas left. Loads of mobility and very good skater at 34. Zero signs of skating decline

Even if that were the case would you rather have an anglo GM or the an incompetent Francophone at the helm? I don't know about you but I'd rather have someone competant rebuilding the team regardless of what language he speaks.
The GM could speak Mandarin and I could careless. A competent GM should be the #1 goal but due to the language criteria Molson had to get creative and find a loophole by giving a new title to Gorton.

It's a salary issue more than anything. Matheson probably won't be here in 2 years and he's easier to move at that time. If anyone was expecting a huge return, you're out to lunch.
And there was room to resign Rem! So I'm good with all of this.
