He is not bad but he is not as good as Petry. One can hope that he can find another level of play in front of his hometown crowd.
Petry had numerous brain cramps.

His contract sucks. Should have just retained on Petry and got something worthwhile in return. Matheson also has an extra year.
His contract is fine. Habs have still to cut some salaries (Drouin's and Byron's).

That seems good for Montreal's rebuild though, right? Minor cap relief, better chance for a higher pick and greater chance of being effective when Montreal comes out of their rebuild.

Watched 5-6 pittsburgh games last year and Matheson was worth his contract and honestly was always the best Dman behind Letang.

Guess that was just pure luck of me watching his best career performance

Don't like the value at all still but Matheson is not as bad as people say, maybe we will flip him by the trade deadline?

I guess so, I was just a big Petry backer from the day he arrived and said he would be great for the Habs and overall he was.

Funny how Pens fans disagree with you for every year besides this year. I guess they have never seen him play either despite playing for them.

...right, he's improved and with it came more responsibility on their 2nd pairing and a bit of PP time...so he improved and is at the age now where it was expected, as Dmen take more time to mature into their roles...so hot takes are ice cold...in other news, water; a bit moist...

Petry doing well playing behind Letang. Weber played all the hard minutes. Petry was good playing against mid lines. But could not play against high end skill. Turnovers

Matheson is a lowkey top pair defenseman. Take it from a Rangers fan I’m glad the Pens don’t have him anymore. Elite skater, can throw big hits, and is very good in transition. He’s really not as bad as people think, hasn’t been bad since he left Florida
Just to give Canadiens fans a hint of this poster's evaluation abilities, he thought Domingue outplayed Shesterkin in the playoffs.

I like watching Matheson play, although I'm not sure his style is the best to help his team win. He's very physically talented, but plays defense like Brett Favre played football, for good or bad

Let’s stop with this “left handed Petry” crap. Petry had 4 consecutive 40+ point seasons before this year which was in rare company. Matheson has a career high of 31.
Yup, Petry remains underrated here because some don't like the contract Bergevin gave him.

My issue with this trade when it first broke was I was hoping any Petry trade would be for a pick or prospect type deal to just clear Petry and his contract off the books and to hopefully sign a cheap vet D or 2 to 1 year deals as a stop gap on D.

Hughes though as since said that he wanted an NHL defenseman back in a Petry trade so I guess he could've done much worst than Matheson and his 4 x 4.875m contract considering dman like Gudbranson and Chiarot are paid 4m and 4.75m respectively.

Anyway I'm just happy that the Petry situation is finally settled so we can move on to something else. :)

I guess no dmen has ever had an outlier season where they do better than all their other years.

hahhaha some of his best hockey was played when Weber was out and he was the go to guy. Come on with this revisionist history.
