Price has said he will play only if he can be at a level he is happy with.

I strongly believe that within the next 18 months, Price will be either:
a. playing well; or
b. retired: or
c. on permanent LTIR
You can forget about option B. I forget how his contract is structured but I very much doubt Price will leave money on the table.

What does retirement vs. permanent LTIR entails for us?
He’s not retiring and leaving $20+ million on the table. His contract isn’t as bad as people think. He has enough injuries for permanent LTIR. I imagine he would’ve already retired if the team was competitive. Us going threw a rebuild gives him more time to make a decision.

A bit off topic but seems quite weird to me that Letang, a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, would speak to another team's GM about a teammate.
Letang was one of Hughes client and very good friend. It happens all the time. You can ask anyone advice on another player.

Are you serious?

You think the General Mangers in the NHL run all of their transactions by the Team President?
You think all other NHL GM’s are required to speak French to be hired for the position? Molson named Gorton VP only because he would have faced some backlash from the media if he named an Anglo GM.

Here is the cap space Hughes was able to create this off-season:

The calculation is probably a little misleading because Weber's contract was never going to be applied to the cap if he was still around, or did they apply that into their calculation?

Thats being said, you still achieve some flexibility by unloading LTIR salary.

Because you take back equally bad contracts like Dadonov and Matheson. Romanov was fairly cheap and Weber on LTIR (didn't count).
Romanov was due for a fairly big raise. And Hughes explained clearly why he did not want to and could not have Weber any longer on the LTIR.

I don't hate that trade, we got rid of two players who didn't want to play here and relieved a bit of cap. Pens won the trade but not by that much.

This is a horrible… I understand that you needed to get rid Petry but you are taking on Matheson for 4years at almost 5m$ that deal didn’t even clear 2M$ of cap space + you are taking on 1 year + you gave Poehling and you are only getting 4th rd pick to do it…
Both Petry and Poehling weren’t part of our future but you would have hope that we could have gotten better… This isn’t a deal that made any sense for MTL it only make sense for Petry… Mathewson isn’t nothing but this is clearly not going to be part of our core, a 4th isn’t helping either and we didn’t clear any cap space.

I have maintained that we shouldn't expect much in terms of positive assets in return for Petry, but rather another player with term coming back that is likely to be younger, cheaper, and with fewer years remaining. We got two out of three. The main point is that we needed to move on from Petry, whether the return was a homerun or not. His sour presence on this rebuilding team would curdle the sauce.

No relation at all. Petry was not an option for Winnipeg.

the deal can still be done IF they accept:
Dvorak + FLO #1 pick next draft + a youngster like Kidney OR ???

Problem is Jets want Guhle. No way.

How was Petry part of our future?! He’s old and literally asked to be traded.

The calculation is probably a little misleading because Weber's contract was never going to be applied to the cap if he was still around.

Thats being said, you still achieve some flexibility by unloading LTIR salary, but it's not quite as simple as this tweet suggests.

CapFriendly is a little more knowledgeable in this area than us.

Technically, his contract counts even if he is on LTIR. It's just that the Habs would be able to go over the cap by the amount of Weber's contract. The Habs were able to go up to $89.357M in spending. And they were pretty much up against that. In fact, they were the team with the least or second least cap space in the league last year.

When they traded Weber and acquired Dadonov, the Habs actually saved $2.857M in cap space. They'll most likely save another $2.5M if they trade him with 50% retained. And then his entire $5M comes off the books next year (unless they get someone back in the deal that still has term).
