Matheson was actually decent last year.


He's nothing special and worse than Petry (except the Petry at the start of last year) but he's a decent puck mover who can skate and is moderately physical. Our defense is absolutely trash on paper now though.

I said early in the thread that I don't remember him being that bad last year and a good # of Pens fans are scatching their heads

I wasn't a huge Matheson fan largely due to his days in Florida, but he turned his game around in Pittsburgh. He played really well for them in the playoffs this year too.

His contract isn't terrible seeing how he's only 28, while Petry is 34, so we gain 6 years there. He's really physical and has a big time shot, so we'll see how he does.

No room for Poehling anymore. Suzuki, Dach, Dvorak & Evans are our 4 centers. Still feel he's a better winger & we never tried him there, but he isn't a huge loss either.

I imagine Edmundson might move at TD now.

I wouldn't call it buyout proof, it's just got a lot of term left so the buyout would be 8 years, 2.25 on the cap for the first 3 years, down to 1.37 for the last 4.

And it'd cost Geoff 18 millions dollars.

Not sure he'd want to go this way.

* Hughes says he won’t trade Petry unless it makes sense.
* Trades the RD Petry for the LD Matheson who has one year more in term.
* Adds Poehling and gets a 4th. For as much as Poehling is struggling, he’s worth more than a 4th.

Can Matheson play RD? Last thing we needed was another LD.

Matheson going to be part of a trade to get Dubois? Or are the Jets asking for Eddy in that package and Matheson was added to replace him?

I don’t hate Matheson but him and Eddy block our young LD’s

Well.. I mean.. patches literally just went for nothing... not a thing. Is it a disappointment in terms of return? Yeah compared to deadline trades... the land scape has changed and capspace is worth more than almost everything else at this point .. clearly this is the best he could get at this point.. if someone was offering more.. he would have taken it. Sucks... but I think the reality of this situation .. hopefully, this was "worth it" to clear out the couple mil of cap because something else is coming.

Vegas had to clear cap space, unlike the Habs.

I think that Hughes being able to trade both Toffoli and Petry, who had term on their deals, without retaining salary is a positive.

The Habs created $6.375M in cap space just by shipping out Toffoli, Petry, and Poehling.

I doubt many care about losing Poehling really. Having to take back Matheson and his extra year of 4.875m to save 1.375m for the next 3 years is what most likely don't like here it seems.

Paccioretty got traded for nothing and Burns at 5.3 million got like a 3rd. In reality this what petry would get.

We got a worse contract in return and gave the better player...
