VandeVelde is a considerably better offensive player than Bellemare is. And VandeVelde was considered the worst of the worst of those terrible Oilers teams. Trying to blame Bellemare's NHL worst production among forwards on VandeVelde is pretty funny.

It wouldn't be so bad if he played 8 minutes a night, but instead, he plays 14 and even gets important minutes because Hextall and Hakstol see him as a key player. What a joke.

How much have his linemates had to do with the poor numbers?

He was 3C for quite a while the first 30 games or so and scored 2 points in that time. He's only spent half the year with VandeVelde.

I think Bellemare has every bit to do with his poor numbers as his linemates do. He just is not good at any tangible thing. Sometimes it's a case of: they all suck.

His best skill is pinning the puck along the boards. That is a successful shift for him. And he's making $1.5M a year for two years!

This has seemingly been the first season that people have **** on Bellemare. For the past couple of seasons, the board seemed to agree that he was a solid bottom line forward. And, some were excited by the World Cup performance.

I'm not sure that I understand the negativity. Would it be that surprising to think that many GMs would value Bellemare as a bottom line forward on their team?

Bellemare's oroblem has never been the player he is. He's a perfectly fine fourth liner.

The problem is that our esteemed coach sees him as something more and overplays him. This has reduced of late and so long as PEB is used as a legit fourth liner I'm fine with this.

What was the urgency to sign this guy now? Teams are standing in line for his services. 3 goals, 6pts. come on.

I liked Bellemare his first season here (Everyone remembers that PK shift he had I'm sure)
but since he got stapled to VV he's looked crummy.

Hopefully VV is gone next year and he can play with someone more competent.

Cant disagree with you on this one.

Giving him a 100% raise to boot is perplexing.

I don't mind Bellemare as a player at all, but I don't like how he is used by Hakstol. I don't exactly know how I feel about this signing.

That's about $450,000 and 1 year too much for Bellemare... but not something I will get really upset, he's a good veteran for us, definitely more useful player compared to VandeVelde... so if Vandevelde is gone next season, then I can live with it.

I have a lot of trouble separating simply resigning a veteran bottom 6 C from the optics of it all, particularly with the horribleness of the season. Being patient with the club is one thing, but rewarding arguably one of the culprits for it is like taking the remains of the wonky space heater that caught fire and burned half your house and putting it on the mantle. I cannot fathom how a professional sports organization reviews the contribution of a player like Bellemare to this season, in the context of his career to date, and decides that he needs to be resigned 1) to two years, 2) at twice his salary, 3) on the day of the trade deadline.

The last point may not seem that important, but to me it emphasizes that Hextall considered this resigning to be of sufficient importance to take some of his time during the flurry of this part of the season to draft it out and negotiate it with Bellemare's agent. I'm not saying that this reduced his time and attention from other deals; I am saying that when you devote time in an otherwise packed agenda to do something, it speaks of its importance to you.

There are two logical paths to take at this point in the team's evolution:
  1. Make well-designed moves to improve in the short term for a good shot at the playoffs while the prospects slowly integrate. The Filppula deal was one of these moves.
  2. Make space for a maximum number of prospects to graduate to the big club as soon as they show themselves to be ready.
The Bellemare signing satisfies neither.

Hextall has told us, that Pierre is a really important player for next 2 years, in mentoring our youth players.

I´am willing to pay him that salary if he shows our youth players how to be a good pro player, who never quits and plays 60 minutes every night. The salary is way too high for Belle´s on ice performance and i really like him for ur bottom six. But if we think, that Hextall pay him for being here an mentoring all our youth players it may be worth it.

The things Hextall is saying to the media often seems to have a whole different approach than a lot of other Sport GM in NA. He seems to be a person who is really focussing on Atmosphere, humanity or social integrity.

Maybe we need to accept this for the future: He will sign guys not only for their on ice performance. If this is the best way to be a contender in pro Sports needs to be seen.

Maybe it´s a bit like the Dallas Mavericks. They have done all to make Nowitzki happy in the last 10 Years, so they resign players that aren´t worth resigning and so on. They won a Title with Dirk... So maybe we will 2 with Hextall :D

I needed to find something positive :D

Just my two cents.
