The irony is Laughton grades out as a solid PKer and would probably be better than whatever veteran intangibles goodness scrub they’d acquire.

If Laughton, Couturier, Patrick, Lindblom, Simmonds, Raffl, Giroux isn’t enough to form a good PKing forward unit, then it’s clearly not Lappy’s fault, so they need to figure out who to blame this year.

Also, this was a pretty unnecessary bump. Also also, I like the idea of Folin, the presumed no doubt about it #7, being able to help the PK. Uhhhh.

Not disagreeing that Folin will likely be #7 - but the guy played in 65 games for the Kings last season. Shouldn't that make him a top 6 defender for Philly without a second glance? I guess it's MacDonald's contract that would push him out of the lineup, not 6 better defenders. I hope this coach will dress him in front of Hagg or Gudas if his play is better.

Couts has an injury history and Giroux will be 31, I'd rather ration their minutes for situations where they can be more productive.
Couts played 21:36 and Giroux 20:22 last year.
And Bergeron is 33 and Marchand 30.

Also, Couts was tied for 58th in PK minutes last year per game with 1:54. Taking 2 shifts a game on the PK for our best defensive player is nothing crazy.

Hakstol doesn't play MacDonald because of his contract. He legitimately believes he's one of our best defensemen, as is proven by his usage.

Yes, there's a 99% chance Folin is better than both MacDonald and Hagg, but that won't mean anything so long as Hakstol is coach, since he doesn't take quality of play into the equation. If that mattered, Hagg doesn't even get into the lineup last year.

Honestly, there's a better chance Folin replaces Gudas than either of our trash defensemen. For some reason Gudas seems to be in Hakstols doghouse, despite being far better than the other two. He wasn't as good as usual last year, but 50% of Gudas is still better than the other two at their peaks.

Ryan Hartman, Simmonds, Gudas, I’m sure I could keep going with Flyers traded away that are/were playing playoff hockey this season.

There's a slew of players that HFBoards thinks aren't good enough for the Flyers (and sometimes the NHL) that other teams somehow, some way, seem to ignore the advice of HFBoards and yet still have success with these guys.

Yes, but all those playoff teams who pick up HF Board Flyer rejects are obviously run by idiots and "lucked" their way into the playoffs.
Because anyone who'd actually want one of those players on their roster can't recognize talent.

Did anyone say this?

These players (PEB, Hartman, Simmonds) do nothing for this Flyers roster, besides maybe Gudas. Team has enough grinder type forwards with minimal skill.

PEB would have helped last season, same way Raffl helped. Not a needle mover but solid depth.
Hartman is a middle of the pack 3rd liner in Minnesota, he's been a tease since he was 22.
Same way Pitlick is a high energy but limited 4th liner.

People here griped about all those marginal players, but we're just now developing the depth where they wouldn't play.
Raffl was traded and replaced by Cates/Laczynski as Laughton moved around.
Pitlick was replaced by NAK.
Laczynski should replace Vorobyev/Bunnaman.

They didn't play these guys b/c they were in love with them, they played them because the kids weren't ready.
Frost got injured, Allison and Laczynski stayed in school, Rubtsov flopped, Ratcliffe is another year or two away.
Vorobyev, Bunnaman, Twarynski, Kase all got shots at stealing a job.

After two periods, Bellemare is one of only five Avs players with a negative xGF%, while their team overall is dominating with 66.22%.

Maybe he has a bunch of hits?

He is epitome of replacement level player. The best thing he ever did was shielding previous iteration of flyers higher ups from criticism. Other than his locker room presence he hasn't done anything noteworthy in his 5ish seasons in NHL. Still could be worse, Zack attack is still in the league lol.

That's what 4th line/3rd pair guys generally are in the cap era.
If they're too good for that role, once they get past their first bridge contract it's up or out.

Which is why I can always identify those around here who think upgrading your #12 forward or #6 D-man is the solution to the team's problems as clueless. If Colorado is playing PEB at his age, it shows how meaningless those changes are to a team's success.

Good teams are built around 9-4-2, 15 players.
It's nice to have depth on the 4th line, 13th forward, 3rd pair, and 7th D-man, but not essential.

The reason teams go with a checking 4th line is you can find guys who skate hard, hit and play defense a lot easier, and pay them less, than skilled guys that you can fit under the cap for a 4th line role. Skilled players on the 4th line tend to be young players who can physically handle that role and can get PT while they adjust to the NHL game.

Colorado is a good example:
10th forward Kadri
11th forward PEB
12th forward Newhook (20) playing 6:36
13th forward Soderberg (35) playing 9:30
14th forward Ranta (20) playing 7:37

6th D-man Timmins (22) playing 9:32
7th D-man Byram (19) DNP
8th D-man MacDonald (28) DNP

Nobody at all here has ever argued that swapping out the 12th or 6th man will fix the whole team.

The argument, as had been explained to.yoj repeatedly over the years, is that when you have one of the worst in the league at those slots, then you can improve the team by improving those spots. And that's true. Everything matters. Upgrading to "replacement level" from "trash heap" for anywhere between 8-15 minutes a night makes the team better than it had been.

Nobody has ever argued it fixes everything as some universal solution. That's a strawman you insist on for no reason.

Really? That's why every year some here limit desired offseason moves to replace Hagg and (forward of your choice on the 4th line), and some other disliked scrub - but don't touch overpaid favorites. And suggest unproved prospects are guaranteed improvements.

Upgrading scrubs isn't as simple as snapping your fingers, Flyers have cycled through Leier, Luby, Pitlick, NAK, Vorobyev, Bunnaman, Twarynski, Kase. PEB has pretty much outplayed all of them, but we had to lose someone in the first ED.
Other than Kase, they all played more minutes than whipping boys Andreoff and Stewart. Some of these players are out of the NHL while Thompson is in the playoffs.

Pitlick is gone b/c he was too expensive for that 12th forward role.
NAK is still here for now, but better raise his game next season.

Flyers now have the depth to improve that 4th line, but Cates is still an unknown, Laczynski has to stay healthy.
Rubtsov, Sushko, Sandin, Twarynski, Kase have played themselves out of contention for now.
Willman, Ratcliffe, Lycksell, Bunnaman are ???
Wisdom, Desnoyers might be a year or two away.
Foerster, Brink are top 9 or bust.

On defense York is a lock for a 3rd line role, Zamula more of a question.
Which is why Hagg and Braun will probably return, low cost veteran depth when you usually end up playing 8 or so D-men over the course of a season. Wylie? Hogberg? Will they be ready next season? Millman, what's his ETA? Attard, St Ivany, will they sign next spring? Andrae? Ginning?

I can't think of anyone who limits their only move to swapping out Hogg-tier players.
