From all the reading I did. My understanding is he wanted 1.8 million. Oilers held firm at a number below a million 2 years. I actually don't even think it was 900k.

Armstrong saw an opportunity to help 2 young players who were not going to get paid. It was impressive and I know Oiler fans feel targeted

At the end of the day it is a business.

I see his Agent came out and said 2 years 1.1 million.

I wonder if the Oilers did one year if the offersheet never happened.

To be fair to management, I bet if both of them were apart of McDavid's inner circle they would have been signed as a priority...you would be fooling yourself if McD and Drai had no input as to what type of roster they wanted.

The real unfortunate part is both Broberg and Holloway failed to establish themselves until very late into their contracts and only for short sample sizes. Some of that was due to injuries and maybe a lack of opportunity in some instances but in reality when they did play they really were not able to grab hold of a spot. They certainly showed potential though. The first flashes of Broberg really asserting himself was in the playoffs, before that his play ranged from average to at times mediocre in the NHL. A person could say the Oilers maybe didn't give him enough opportunity etc. but in reality the Oilers depth positions were not tough competition and they struggled to even make an impact versus average depth players at times.

Broberg appears to be a good potential 2-way d-man that does need some offensive opportunity to really get full value from his play and he was not going to get much of that in Edmonton to justify a 4.6 million dollar contract, at least not this season. St. Louis had the roster spots available and the ability to take a risk with these contracts that most Cup contending teams would not likely match. It was just a really good situation for St. Louis to take advantage of and if it works out well that is good but I think the Oilers will be fine and they can hopefully acquire a good fit at the deadline. Of course it would have been most ideal to keep them at reasonable contracts.

Also Broberg being unhappy with the organization. Remember Oilers would have been playing him on his offside and he mentioned he didn't like that and he had asked for a trade the previous season.

Its not black and white that oilers lost him because they were caught unprepped, Broberg's agent was playing offersheet all along, the surprise was 4.6 million.

I must admit I do find the Canadian fan bases sniping each other pretty amusing, but the only people that can badmouth St. Louis are other St. Louisans dammit!

I guess it was always gonna be a contentious issue considering the circumstances, but hope things work out for both fan bases and we can all have a good laugh about it in a couple of years.

Im sure the Oilers would love to have kept him but there was nothing to show he was worth a 4.6 investment. Especially after being burned by short sample size masters like Yamamoto.

This is fairly accurate. Last year he was pretty penciled in to the lineup and did nothing to seize that opportunity. If it knocks now and he takes it, good for him. Some Oiler fans are salty, and I surely will continue to have schadenfreude for the Blues. But not salty about Broberg. I agree with what the Oilers did on Broberg.

Doug Armstrong has already vocalized that he offered Petro a NMC, so I'm not sure why people are still hung up about this.

At any rate, I agree. Broberg is showing he can handle top pairing minutes and play at both ends of the ice. If he can keep level up for 50-55ish games, I'd comfortably consider him a 1D.

That is a big ask, but I guess it's what you're paying him for. He never showed any sign he could do that here even with much less responsibility.

Perhaps he took a step in his development at an opportune time for St. Louis because he's literally doing all of that right now. He's playing 20+ minutes per night with 0.8 points per game despite minimal top power-play time and a +7.
