the way he played this year vs last year in the playoffs against the canucks was a big step forward, a lot less hesitency in the nz. I wonder if its some off season regimen he was on, or just Bannister's and now JM's system fitting him to a tee?

This is extremely bad luck for Oilers fans, and phenomenal luck for Blues fans. It is particularly brutal because if Broberg were on the Oilers and playing the way he is this season, I would absolutely expect them to win the Stanley Cup. We got that lucky here. This is the best franchise event since we inexplicably let our #1 D walk over NMC bickering.

We're very happy with Holloway too, he's been great.

But Broberg is a cornerstone that we just ... took ...

He wouldn't have as much value on the Oilers being left shot. I wish they kept him (and Holloway), but I don't think he would increase their odds of winning the cup that much.

The Oilers need to trade for a defenseman as good as Broberg or there is no chance at a cup. Right now, the D is downgraded compared to last year. They traded Ceci on the assumption that they will be adding that last piece on D

The Oilers should have kept Broberg for sure. His excellent performance in the playoffs was not a fluke. Broberg's greatest asset is between his ears. He just plays the game right. His floor was always high.

The Oilers could still add that player, but make no mistake. The pressure is on to do so, especially in light of their screw up

Well their intention is to upgrade Stecher. That's their biggest goal acquisition-wise between now and the TDL. What would the pairings look like if we kept Broberg? He isn't going to be anywhere near as good as he is in STL playing right side.

Doug Armstrong has already vocalized that he offered Petro a NMC, so I'm not sure why people are still hung up about this.
It is indeed odd that the first time anyone ever heard of Armstrong agreeing to an NMC is your post right now. Maybe soon we will learn that Armstrong went to Petro's house with the exact contract Petro wanted but Petro wouldn't even answer the door. And Doug could even see him in the window not coming to the door!

But in reality, Alex Pietrangelo thought he belonged in the caliber of players who could ask for that and Doug Armstrong was quoted as saying that would give him more power than Tom Stillman therefore it couldn't happen. And then when Hampus Lindholm was available while the Blues still had a loaded top 9 he required an NMC and therefore the exact player we needed was not even an option to bid on.

No, I'm not the first person to say this. Doug Armstrong explicitly said this in a podcast interview during this past offseason. Here's the conversation.

He got EXPOSED tonight.

Showed exactly why the Oilers didn’t want to overpay him.

He shows glimpses of elite play but just makes these inexplicably horrible gaffes from spazzing out or just plain whiffing on pucks. His defensive positioning is also inconsistent.

Got absolutely dunked on tonight by the Oilers

Its like you guys have been waiting all season to come here and keep this pointless thread alive. Do we really want to do this all year? Where every time he has a good run people come to troll Oiler fans and every bad game Oilers come shouting, "I told you so!" Can we please just let this thread die.

I can't speak for Oilers fans but Blues fans are happy and one bad game (it really wasn't that bad) isn't going to change our opinion.

Lol @ oilers fans coming here to gloat.

Broberg was fine tonight, not his best game overall but fine given the circumstances. Holloway was great. Blues are still very happy to have both players. :eyeroll:
He was fine tonight? He was definitely fine at giving McDavid a goal and Leon a free breakaway lmfao

He's playing on the Blues top pair and looks good with Parayko. And he's still a kid, hasn't even hit his prime yet.

A year ago today he was in the minors because Ceci and Dehairnais were seen as "superior" defenseman according to the Knoblauch.:laugh::laugh:
He was in the minors because his confidence was crushed after being jerked around by Woodcroft/Manson, a nervous/low confidence Broberg tends to be a liability on the ice. He needed regular playing time to sort out his game, and he wasn't going to get it in Edmonton while they were trying to turn their season around after a bad start last year.
