I really like a lot of the players on Ottawa and I think they have a chance to be really good team in the future, but my dear God what terrible management they have had.

For a team that hasn't made the playoffs in years, it's astounding how they can be up against the cap. They have mostly younger players, even with recent high draft picks and good ELC opportunity, to be this backed up against the wall is absurd.

Assuming the 2M x 2 year rumor was what Pinto would sign for - If Norris is fine against Washington, keep Joseph, waive Brannstrom and Kublaik for 2M+ in cap, and use that cap to sign Pinto. Both Brannstrom and Kubalik will clear waivers.

Roll with no scratches and abuse emergency call ups because the cap is only an abstract idea.

It isn't until the longer Western road trips in December start that they have to get worried about cosplaying as the Vegas Golden Knights cap situation. At that point, if nobody has blown out a knee and solved the problem by ending up on LTIR, attach a 2nd to Kubalik and call it a day. Maybe also let he other team have a 5th round pick in exchange for a 6th, that usually does the trick.

Should have taken whatever Ottawa was offering - likely a 2nd. Joseph is a solid player who had a shitty, injury filled season last year.

Now, we can't afford to lose him.

How is such a mediocre team this tight to the cap?
Our GM has no accountability and makes a terrible move for every good move he makes.

We have over $5M against the cap this year to pay Bobby Ryan, Michael Del Zotto, Matt Murray and Colin White to not play for us. That $5M gets Pinto signed plus another 3rd liner.

Additionally, after getting Kubalik back in the package for DeBrincat, Pierre went out and signed Tarasenko. Loved the move, but he has had 2.5 months since to move Kubalik/Brannstrom/Joseph and still hasn't done it.

Kubalik is still the most expendable and easiest to trade away IMO.

Been saying it basically all summer, trading Joseph would be a mistake. Especially if it is to keep our 8th best scorer, who does nothing else and is an impending UFA, and especially not if it will cost us a high puck to dump our 9th best goal scorer, who is an excellent PKer, forechecker, can play up and down the lineup, and is signed to a deal that will be totally palatable as soon as we clear $2m of short-term cap space

Because the team is paying its players to extremely long contracts before they break out.

Short term pain for long term gain.

The Sens have essentially locked down the entire core for 7-8 years. There are no more core players to lock down, unless you consider a Pinto a core player. As the cap rises, they'll have lots to breathing room to add more depth while the core players are playing above their contracts. They'll have a very good contention window as players like Tkachuk, Stutzle and Sanderson enter their prime.

I’m more confused about things like Tarasenko that they didn’t seem to properly plan for.

I’m more confused about things like Tarasenko that they didn’t seem to properly plan for.

The Tarasenko rumor came out the day ADB was traded, when asked about Kubalik being his replacement, and whether he was done with his roster.

Dorion essentially said that there was another deal pending but that he wasn't going to release any details until it was finalized.

So it was in the works for awhile.

It's possible that:

(a) Dorion was relying too much on Toronto dumping Murray instead of putting him on LTIR; and/or
(b) Dorion grossly underestimated Pinto's demands.
