A bit expensive for sure, but we'll have to wait and see for the structure.

180 million guaranteed. Certainly none of that in year 5. If all (or most) of the non-guaranteed money is back-loaded, it could mean a 4-year contract with 45 million per with a 5th year at 75 million non-guaranteed tacked on. Probably not that extreme, but I guess the first 4 years could still average well below 50 million per.

Howie's been both good and lucky for the last few years. It does take both.

They've narrowly avoided multiple major icebergs through absolutely no doing of their own in the last year. I do worry about that luck running out because it has to at some point. And again, I was fine trading for Russ. I was fine having interest in Allen Robinson and Calvin Ridley when I didn't know AJ Brown was available. None of those moves should have been killed at the time. Need the luck too.

Absolutely.

Now I didn't think they thought the world of Jalen when we took him, but I mean...they had to have, right? Otherwise why reach for him in the 2nd, why do it when Carson just got paid & took the team to the playoffs?

I dunno, but I love Howie.

Anyway: I think we should take Skoronski at #10 if he's there (and Jalen Carter isn't) and we stay. Protect your asset and stay cheap on the lines.

If you look at Howie's history, he wants two QBs when he's trying to win. I think they put more of an emphasis on backup QB than most teams do now and WAY more than most teams did then. I would find it impossible to justify to tell me they thought Hurts was a can't miss prospect given that he progressed well and they still tried to trade for Russ last year.

I don't want to re-litigate how much I hated the process of that Day 2, so I'll just say I think needing 2 QBs is correct and they deserve praise for that aspect. Even though Minshew didn't work out, that trade made massive sense.

Agreed. I mean we're kind of the poster child for having a great backup QB at this point so I enjoy that MO of ours.

Restructuring almost never changes the amount of money a player takes. Hell, simple restructures don't even require player permission. Now adding void years and such, as Howie is wont to do, does require cooperation. It's really not a question of wanting to win. The contract was at market rate. He didn't do the team a huge favor like Mahomes. Nor do I blame him for declining. I don't blame anyone for getting paid.

When we get the actual breakdown, you'll see what their plan is. 60 (or 64) MM coming in new cash in the next 2 years gives you a rough idea already.

I still want to know why that offense didn't change much when Minshew played. It's probably not the day for that discussion, but I remain baffled. They had a great staff.
Are you talking about this year? I mean he played ok/good enough vs Dallas. We saw from that one post with the large document where someone broke down the 2022 eagles offense. Largely, they leaned heavy on hesitation by the defense. The Saints didn't hesitate and just let minshew have the running lanes, and had the speed to track Minshew down.

i do think Mariota is a much better fit, even though he cant run like he used to be able to.

Win before they have to let a huge weapon in Devonta walk is the plan

Not thrilled with the number but I can’t blame him for no discount. You have one contract in your prime years and that is your one big payday for the rest of your life. Make it count. I’m also 100% on pick 10 being OL/DL now. Draft a receiver in round 1 the year Devonta leaves maybe

Hurts was never a reach, even as a top backup he was worth a late 2nd rd pick. His skill package was perfect for coming off the bench and salvage a season with an injury prone starter (Wentz).

And they were also betting on off the chart intangibles, which is why I value them as much as raw skill - the guys with the work ethic improve more than the guys who have great skill but slack off once they get paid.

There's only one answer to "Does Jalen Hurts deserve to be the highest paid per season player in NFL history". It's not yes
That's about contract timing, cap is going up the next five years by a substantial amount, this contract will be middle of the pack by the time it expires.

At the same time, they could also restructure to spread that money out over a few more seasons rather than all up front.

And I'm not questioning his desire to win. I definitely think it is there, and now that he's secured the bag, I wouldn't be overly surprised to see him willing to work with the team to spread out the payment plan, so to speak, in order to help bring in one additional piece or more a year.

Plus, cap will probably go up and make this all a nothingburger in the end anyway

That comes with new income. The league just signed an 11 year tv contract last year.
Yeah and because of that contract the salary cap is projected to be well above 300m by the time this contract is done. Those QB contracts will continue to skyrocket. Getting Hurts at below 50m would have been great but also probably was not realistic considering what Daniel Jones just got, the Watson travesty of a contract and Russell Wilson signing his 5 year 245m extension (which to me looks like it clearly was the template for these negotiations) last offseason.

I am just glad that my biggest worry of last summer (Howie trading for Wilson or Watson) did not come to fruition. Hopefully Jalen will continue to improve and make this giant contract look good.

They don't have to let Devonta walk, they will be able to afford him in 3 years, assuming he gets the 5Y option.

I'm still on the fence about this. If they can afford him, it's going to require restructures on guys like AJ Brown and Goedert. They're certainly willing to spend the cash it takes to do things like this, but it's tough to commit 30ish to 2 WRs AND 20ish to a TE without a rookie scale QB. Doubly so on a team that likes to put a ton of money into the lines. Slay and Bradberry also can't be cut until post 6/1 in 2025. It's a tricky spot, although I trust them to navigate it as well as they can.

It's also that projecting what a very good but not Tier 1 WR is going to make 3 years from now is not something I think we can do now. Those contracts are soaring.
