Just finished the game. Both teams' goaltending was so bad that Fletcher had heart palpitations watching and Flahr had extra heart palpitations watching.

To his credit, both of Gauthier's goals were nice, and they were in dangerous areas. They gave him 2 assists, but they were more generous/fortuitous than actual passes: one was a forecheck whack that came to a single defender in the zone who scored a horrific goal; the other was a total whiff shot that a BU player may have helped go in and I'm surprised wasn't unassisted.

I came away both nodding at his strengths and not really changing my mind whatsoever holistically. He doesn't really look like a center, and there was a lot of upright gliding and watching. He comes alive off the rush, and pretty much every play came off the rush. I don't know why he stays back on his heels so much when he's an athletic mover in stride; it doesn't help his short area quickness.

For a "power forward," he actually rarely had the puck in the o-zone cycle. Mostly off puck and rim plays. He had one very nice backdoor PP pass, his 2nd goal was a give and go, but otherwise no real pass generating or play controlling off his stick. Some more low % shots, not egregiously. I think he looks best when he's playing straight line and direct. He should be a good complimentary scorer, but I still don't see elite NHL talent, and maybe not at center.
Does he one-time every first touch on the PP or is it just my sampling?

He had one nice backdoor pass, but yes, shooters shoot. For some reason they weren't actually focused on getting him the puck when he was open on the PP.

I can imagine 4 points makes the Twitter crowd go wild (those assists were legit LMAOs), and he was pretty good, but it's a lot more complicated a watch than that projecting NHL skills. He has the puck for a lot less time than people might think, and there's just not much in the cycle. I see the gears turning when he's off puck doing center things. Not that the Flyers don't do everything possible to minimize strengths, but his game screams "rush winger with elite playmaking C." Like Draisaitl.

Well, I'm glad you settled upon a hard and fast rule with no factual basis. The days when you can find skill in the mid-late rounds is over! Glad we settled that. Me, I just prefer seeking out usable hockey players, whatever the particulars. No one cares if the Flyers take an interesting 6'3 player, that's not the point.

Seeler can barely handle a puck, and even he had 0.5 point/game in his D+1 in the USHL. 0.2 points/game for your USHL career in your 18-19 seasons is basically not a prospect territory. The Flyers draft for fit, depth, and lazily at that.
It workS like that: EHM Draft day. Sort players for block shots and hits. Scroll through them and take the ones with a huge body frame and high weight. click draft player!

ENJOY

Its that easy and other things are too hard these days

(Hey Chuck, can I sit on your knee
Got questions I need to ask about my ELC)

No, JOB, don’t you sit on my knee
You’re too old now, you’re twenty three

You’ll always be Ron Hextall’s guy
(I’ll always be Ron Hextall’s guy)
But you’re twenty - three

Well, if JOB is projected to be no more than a 4th line candidate, take the 2nd rd pick, if he has middle six potential, sign him.

That NHL contract has been promised to him. They just need to clear the slot.
There was an article that said he was signed as insurance. Insurance from what? From getting a top 5 pick? In a league that continually stresses youth, they keep trying to increase their average age. Because if they can't be good, at least they can lead the league in veteran grit.....and blocked shots of course

Unless it is the first pick in the 2nd round of the 2023 draft (which it is not), I'll take a chance on him. He looks like he can skate pretty good and is close to the team lead in shot so there could be something there. Plus we all know that 2nd round picks to CF are vapor....

I thought JOB was worth a contract at points last year. It was his first full year at a level clearly above the prep level and he produced well. It seems like with the infusion of talent at BU he has kind of taken a backseat. They've made no inclination that they intend to sign him and if they did, they should have signed him after last year. He'll be 24 for most of next year with free agency at 27. Seems like an easy choice to just take the pick and reset the clock on another prospect (with hopefully someone else making the pick).

What I don't know is when they could get that pick. I believe the earliest is in 2024 with 2025 being the latest if and when JOB goes back to school. The Wild got their second round pick in the 2022 Draft for their 2018 unsigned 1st round pick - Filip Johansson (*cough*Flahr*cough*) but Swedes have a hard signing deadline. College goes by graduating class or when the player elects free agency. Kevin Hayes was a 2010 first rounder, played all four years at BC, signed with the Rangers after his senior year and Chicago got the pick the following year in 2015.

JOB transferred out to play Junior A which saved a year of eligibility and then he got an additional year of eligibility because of Covid during the 20-21 season. He could play 6 seasons as an amateur post high school.

We'll see how JOB finishes the season, he still has 20 games or so to pick up the pace.
last 5 games 5-1 6 after starting 10g 1-4 5.
He'd add needed speed, and an option at center, but has to show enough to give up a future 2nd.
At 23, with 65 college games before this season, it's time to produce.

Meanwhile, Toumaala continues to score in Metsis, 10g 10-5 15 +10.
This is what he should have done last year, play a whole season at an appropriate level, CHL, Metsis or Allsvenskan, develop his skill package and some confidence before jumping to a man's league.

They brought back the WJAC U19 tournament back this year for the first time since 2020. Alex Bump is playing for USA. He scored a goal & had an assist in the pre-tournament game against Canada East.

So it’s pretty interesting. Typically their rosters are draft eligible kids whether it be first year or re-entries then you’ll have some kids like Bump who were drafted but are playing in the USHL post draft season before they head off to college.

But this year they got a U17 kid in Mac Swanson on the roster. He’s a PPG+ player in the USHL this year with Fargo & North Dakota commit. I don’t know how many players that young they’ve taken over the years of this tournament. So could be someone to watch for next year’s draft.

Yeah I was doing a little research the other day and he caught my eye. That is serious production for a 16 year old in that league. Straight from Alaska too.

Ian McCoshen is the only true 16 year old to play for the US team but other older D-1 guys have.

Gavin McCarthy and Andrew Strathmann look like the best draft eligible prospects on the team (think I highlighted them in the draft thread a few weeks ago). Knuble's son is there. He should have been drafted last year and I assume he'll get picked this year because teams always seem to be a year late on these USHL guys. Livanavage is another productive Chicago Steel guy. Not sure he has the tools but probably did enough to get draft last year.

Canada West is usually good but the BCHL guys don't play in the tournament anymore so that kind of takes away from it. The Russian u18 team is usually a threat at this thing, but obviously aren't there this year. I think Sweden is missing a couple of their top u18 guys so the US team should be heavy favorites.

Yeah I thought this was gonna be a down year for USA draft wise. But imo it’s looking better as this year goes on.

Even a guy like Musty who’s polarizing is currently at 1.58 PPG in the OHL. That would be one of the more productive U18 seasons in the league in the last 20 years or so if he stays in that range come years end.
