Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

If he fails again i suppose he can go be a #2 center on a good team and have "success".

Pettersson didn't fail last year - he was phenomenal.

In what world is Pettersson a 2C? It's like saying Draisaitl is a 2C because he plays behind McDavid. Absurd.

Pettersson is ascending in to a top 10 player in the league. Please take your hot take elsewhere.

How many times have we seen this statement suggested but never actually stated by the player in question?

How many times has said player then actually demanded a trade or forced the teams hand to move them?

What is it? 1 in 30? Maybe 1 in 20?

At the end of the year Pettersson will be a Canuck, a new contract will be reached and this will have turned in to nothing.

Teams who have the assets and cap to trade for Pettersson

-Habs
-Coyotes
-Kraken
-Blackhawks
-Preds
-Flyers
-Sabres

Maybe
-Wings
-Blues

If he wants to be in the playoffs quickly it would be

-Kraken
-Sabres
-Wings
Funny how you listed the Habs first lol. I would never want the Habs to trade for Pettersson; it would cost way too much and would f*** up the rebuild. Habs should stay the course.

I mean, the wings definitely have the assets and with Petterssen they would 100% be in the playoffs.

With all that being said, I don't think Yzerman would be willing to give up the necessary assets that everyone is thinking EP will actually get in return.

Compromise with 1 of Krebs, Rosen or Ostlund?
Kulich is the guy I'd target. Even moreso than Power.

Although Power, Ostlund, and a 1st is a really strong package that definitely gets considered.

To be frank you can't ask for a whole lot more than that. I'd be ok with it.

Obviously would rather just give Petey a blank check and sign him for 8 years. But if we gotta move him, that's a haul.

Montreal maybe interested in Pettersson if Canucks can't get him signed. Around deadline or next summer. We probably be drafting around 10. That could be in play. We likely add couple of extra first at deadline. Monahan, Anderson, Savard likely moved by then. So we can move a high pick.

We can offer similar to Dach trade. We moved 13 plus 66 for Dach.

If the Oilers were missing the playoffs every year instead of being (checks notes) the 6th best team in the league ... sure I would have to think in the scenario equivalent to the Canucks it would be a worrying situation.
I'd say they were closer to the second best team in the league after the trade deadline.

I don't think what he said was completely outrageous.

Having said that, the trend of Canadian teams having to deal with less enthusiastic players continues.

We need the next CBA and salary cap structure to level the playing field for Canadian teams somehow. And for that, Canadian teams (and Canadian hockey in general) needs to put a more united front on these issues.
What do you mean by level the playing field? A higher salary cap for Canadian teams?

Did you really just equate EP’s value to Dach’s?

That will be no where close to acquire Pettersson

You do realize Pettersson has more points this season than Dach has in his entire career, yes? They aren't even remotely close in terms of value.

I think that's a fair statement by Pettersson as long as he produces to his true quality.
I also think Vancouver should make the Playoffs, barring a goaltending injury

If Vancouver is lousy this season and EP won’t resign and demands a trade, he’d be ideal for the Wild. They have a ton of prospects they can send the other way.

Either Boldy is the centerpiece or if he’s off the table, 3 or 4 of their recent high picks can go the other way.

EP + Hoglander for Rossi, Ohgren, Faber and Yarov + a one year NHL contract player for cap purposes.

4 B prospects. Not a chance.

the athletic has three of them listed in their top 50 NHL prospects. Faber the 4th and is honorable mention. He’s a RHD with size, a big need for Vancouver.

rossi feels overrated but these are not random B prospects like Hoglander.

other Wild prospects

Riley Heidt, C
Marat Khusnutdinov, C
Carson Lambos, LHD

they have a goalie too. As well as their current starter, who is 25 I believe. Lots to horsetrade with.

Like the Wild, Habs have the assets to horsetrade with.

EP for Dach, David Reinbacher and Filip Mesar, or RW or Sean Farrell, LW or logan mailloux (RHD). Add Monahan or Evans for some cap reasons.

Yea but is EP signing with Montreal? I’m not convinced.

Mathew Barzal for Elias Pettersson
By all accounts, Barzal is happy with the Islanders and wants to spend his career there.

Value isn't far off from a player to player perspective per se, but one side is locked in long term and happy while the other is not locked in long term and wants to have the chance to compete for the Stanley Cup year in and year out.

There's a greater chance of the Islanders looking to trade for Pettersson using other assets or sign him on the open market than them considering swapping Barzal for Pettersson.
