Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

By all accounts, Barzal is happy with the Islanders and wants to spend his career there.

Value isn't far off from a player to player perspective per se, but one side is locked in long term and happy while the other is not locked in long term and wants to have the chance to compete for the Stanley Cup year in and year out.

There's a greater chance of the Islanders looking to trade for Pettersson using other assets or sign him on the open market than them considering swapping Barzal for Pettersson.
Islanders don’t really have the assets to acquire Pettersson.

Vancouver has barely gotten off the ground after the mess Benning left and when Pettersen leaves they'll be back to square one. What a disaster.

The Vancouver situation would look to have more to do with ownership than management
Disagree, although FA isn’t a top tier owner. Benning did far more damage to this organization in a much shorter amount of time

I have no idea why the thought he needed to say that publicly. The pressure he put the team under and the questions he will have to answer all year will be crazy. Just tell that to the team in private. What a rube.
I think these things come out when you no longer have trust in management. There's no other reason to publicly give the bird to your franchise like this. If he actually still cared about his team he would have kept it in house.

Look at Rutherford when he went on HNIC over the Beaudreu non sense. He was unhinged. The org is a disaster.

If they had have just torn it down and dumped everybody at the deadline and this summer, maybe someday they’d have success.

They’re in hockey purgatory though as their shitty, meddling owner attempts to push off the inevitable every year. What a mess.

It's a mix of both. Gillis and Linden wanted to do a full scale rebuild and were subsequently fired/resigned not long afterwards. It's also strongly rumored Aquilini insisted on the Tortorella hire only to let Gillis take the fall when it, predictably, didn't work.

There's no denying Benning is an incompetent buffoon who shouldn't be left in charge of a lemonade stand much less a NHL franchise. Alas, he was absolutely enabled by Aquilini's constant meddling

If Vancouver is lousy this season and EP won’t resign and demands a trade, he’d be ideal for the Wild. They have a ton of prospects they can send the other way.

Either Boldy is the centerpiece or if he’s off the table, 3 or 4 of their recent high picks can go the other way.

EP + Hoglander for Rossi, Ohgren, Faber and Yarov + a one year NHL contract player for cap purposes.

Boldy would definitely need to be going the other way

the guy should be grateful for vancouver fans backing the existance of an nhl franchise where he can live a life of fortune and fame , instead hes got more demands lol . the guy should be gung ho behind the franchise . ide trade him instantly

Neat. Show the quote where he asked to get out please.

Let’s face it. Not something the Canucks wanted heading into training camp. Now it’s going to be constantly brought up, every city they go, once a week locally, etc, etc.

They need to nip this early in camp. Talk to EP and make a quick statement, then try burying it. He honestly shouldn’t have said anything. Not knowing the Canadian hockey media.

The only people this is good for is Demko, Boeser and Miller. The media will be too busy with EP to bash them every time something goes wrong.

There’s no quote from him. This is Friedman speculating.

That said, he has been clear about wanting to play for a winner. And I think a lot of Canucks fans are fine with it. It’s on management if they don’t lock him down.

But how many times have we seen this? Young RFA postures like this and then 90% of the time, he stays put. And then fans of other teams come in and say “lol overpaid”.

Pettersson better player but he also will command somewhere between 11 to 12 million caphit. On next contract

Who would've thought, someone who finished top 10 in points and 7th in Selke voting at the age of 24 is projected to command that type of money. Even with what his next contract figures to be, he's worth a haul (if we did go down that route), players that are as young and talented as he is are pretty much never available (Matthew Tkachuk being the real exception, Eichel's case had extenuating circumstances with the whole disk replacement which a lot of team's doctors were vehemently against). 11-12 million long term would universally have all Canucks fans happy.

Only in August in a Canadian city (and on hf video game fantasy trade boards) is it HUGE NEWS that a superstar RFA hasn't extended while still having a year on his deal and with the salary cap about to climb precipitously.

Oh, he wants to make sure the team is going in a positive direction before signing until he's 32 "tHeRe'S oNlY 1OnE pOsSiBiLe aNsWeR hE wAnTs oUt."

Let's wait until there's more than a bored Friedman saying he 'thinks' Petey wants the team to show something before he signs (which is sort of a 'duh' statement but also not very illuminating) before we panic and flip the switch, shall we?
