Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

This isn’t surprising to most Canucks’ fans. Reality is, if the team doesn’t take a step forward next season, they need to re-examine their strategy and if EP forces his way out, Quinn isn’t going to be far behind. At that point they need to strongly look into an actual rebuild. Until then, Go Canucks Go!
devils say no

I don't think what he said was completely outrageous.

Having said that, the trend of Canadian teams having to deal with less enthusiastic players continues.

We need the next CBA and salary cap structure to level the playing field for Canadian teams somehow. And for that, Canadian teams (and Canadian hockey in general) needs to put a more united front on these issues.
you mean they need a competitive advantage to compensate for their incompetent management groups or owners.

the rules of the nhl (hard salary cap, draft, free agency etc.) are responsible that no team can stay at the top forever. it is now a cycle of tear down, rebuild, develop and contend. teams/owners unwilling to see that reality (or trying to speed up the process) lead them to permanent mediocrity.

oh canada ...

Who would've thought, someone who finished top 10 in points and 7th in Selke voting at the age of 24 is projected to command that type of money. Even with what his next contract figures to be, he's worth a haul (if we did go down that route), players that are as young and talented as he is are pretty much never available (Matthew Tkachuk being the real exception, Eichel's case had extenuating circumstances with the whole disk replacement which a lot of team's doctors were vehemently against). 11-12 million long term would universally have all Canucks fans happy.
It's big money

Disagree, although FA isn’t a top tier owner. Benning did far more damage to this organization in a much shorter amount of time
I didn’t explain myself properly. Yes I agree Benning’s moves were shortsighted at times. I was talking more about the inability to rebuild. The concern I’d have with trading Petterson after trading Horvat is that it should signal a rebuild but I’m skeptical ownership will ok that which will hamstring management if they do have to trade him. Hopefully he is happy in Vancouver and will sign an extension. I don’t think top players jumping ship is good for the game even if the NBA thrives on it. Just my thoughts.

EP for Boldy + Rossi.

Vancouver trading for a first line winger cost controlled and younger than EP and a former top 10 pick that plays C.
Anytime you have to say "former top 10 pick" you've lost the argument. And I'm guessing that saying he plays C means he is at best a hybrid winger/centre.

Pettersson is likely not moving but if he is that offer would be beat badly.

Better hope he isn’t moving or you’re just setting up yourself for a huge dissapointment. UFA Petterson getting them Boldy and Rossi would be a haul.

I personally don't think he's moving and as far as I can tell all he said is he's weighing his options between signing long term or short term. Short term would suck but it's not the same as he's requesting a trade.

This is a haul when you over-rate Marco Rossi. 5'9" skilled C.
21gp 0g 1a -8 In the NHL.

I get he's young and has untapped potential but we're talking about Pettersson here.

Anytime "former top 10 pick" is used to convince you, you run in the other direction. Virtanen was a former top ten pick.

Boldy is 22 years old 6’2 30 goal scorer who is scoring at 0.80PPG in his second season in the league while having above average posession numbers.

Rossi is 21 year old PPG player in the AHL and a former top 10 pick from just couple years ago.

What exactly are you expecting unwilling to re-sign Pettersson to get if you think this isn’t a good a haul?
UFA Pettersson?
Didn’t realize he would be a RFA, but the point still stand if he isn’t willing to re-sign.

Winning first overall is overrated, ask Edmonton and Toronto….
not every top draft pick wins a stanley cup. but nearly all stanley cup winners were build through the draft with top end talent:
- pittsburgh (crosby, malkin)
- chicago (kane, toews)
- los angeles (doughty, kopitar)
- washington (ovechkin)
- tampa (stamkos, hedman)
- colorado (mackinnon, makar)

st. louis and vegas are more exceptions than the rule.

easily? Vancouver would be fortunate if the base of an EP deal is a player the age, contract status and caliber of Matt Boldy. Don’t hold your breath.

Boldy + a prospect the athletic recently ranked as 30th best prospect in the nhl, well before anyone in Vancouvers system, is not an offer that will be easily beat.

Vancouver only has two prospects mentioned by the Athletic (honorable mention).
Your last two first rounders (2022 & 2023).

podkolzin and Hoglander didn’t even make honorable mention.

the Athletic considers Rossi a better prospect than Tom Willander, RHD, whom felt quite reachy so high in the great 2023 draft. The Avs got a very similar caliber prospect at the end of round 1 in Mikhail Gulyayev.

so you can bag on Rossi. He hasn’t developed as fast or much as expected… yet Rossi is still held in higher regard by many than your top prospect.

Boldy + Faber (RHD) + a 2nd rounder for EP
