Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

I have no idea why the thought he needed to say that publicly. The pressure he put the team under and the questions he will have to answer all year will be crazy. Just tell that to the team in private. What a rube.

I mean if we really wanna get technical with it it's actually 3 seasons if he doesn't sign a contract next offseason since the only reason it's 2 is because he'll hit the 7 season threshold
Next summer he can accept his qualifying offer or file for arbitration. The award will automatically be 1 year because that takes him to UFA status. So no. It's not several years, its not 3 years, It's 2 years unless he signs a longer term extension before that

that would be re-signing with Vancouver though which this threads title says he doesn't want to do

hypothetically if he refused to re-sign with them and they didn't trade him then him not hitting that 7 season threshold would add another year because he wouldn't be a UFA until he turned 27

He's not going to sit out a year. He does have to power to force his way out of town though.

He didn't say it. All the quotes are from Eliotte Friedman and his opinion.

So okay, Vancouver should do that. Do whatever it takes to keep him even if it means walking him to UFA just to buy that other year. If the team catches fire, he will re sign long term. He loves it there but wants wins.

There is another path there too. If nothing improves and UFA status is looming, facilitate a sign and trade
Agree with Ponder's underlying point that the Canucks have zero leverage here with an arbitration year then UFA.

My problem with your approach is that the closer he gets to UFA status, the less leverage the Canucks have in a deal. This is essentially identical to the Hawks/Debrincat deal last year with OTT. He's under contract for 1 year, has arbitration rights, and can walk as UFA. Everyone thought the Hawks got pwned in that deal, but OTT had to trade him 1 year later and got about half the trade value back from DET because AD could limit where he wanted to sign. Obviously EP is a much better player, playing a more valuable position, but IMO it's imperative for the Canucks to either lock him up long term, or get max value for him now because the closer he gets to UFA, the more likely a team would be to see if they can just sign him as a UFA.

The "sign and trade" is limited because they're really hard to do. I know the PLD deal was just done, but the only reason that worked out the way it did IMO was that LA had some quality younger assets that they had to move to free up the $'s to sign PLD. I don't think that teams would be lining up to move blue chip prospects not making $'s in a "sign and trade", because they probably need those cheap assets to fill out the roster.

He is eligible for UFA if he has seven accrued seasons or has reached 27 by June 30. See Article 10.1(a)(i) which begins with:

"Any Player who either has seven (7) Accrued Seasons or is 27 years of age
or older as of June 30 of the end of a League Year, shall, if his most recent
SPC has expired, with such expiry occurring either as of June 30 of such
League Year or June 30 of any prior League Year, become an Unrestricted
Free Agent."

He already has five accrued seasons so can become an unrestricted free agent after two more seasons, at the end of the 2024-25 season, unless he signs a contract beyond that time.

yes and if he didn't sign a contract next offseason he wouldn't accrue that 7th season

Slafkovsky, 1st in 2024, Barron and Dvorak lets do it
Take out Dvorak and add Suzuki and I still don't like the trade. Montreal doesn't have enticing assets. We don't want to trade with you.

Suzuki and Caufield are nice pieces, but they're not what you build a cup contender around.

Why would Petey want to go to Montreal anyways?

Of course you would.
We need a young center coming back, and Kulich is the kind of guy I feel fits the culture we wanna build here. He's the guy we want coming back.

Maybe take Power off the table and add a lesser defensive prospect or young player? Kulich, unprotected 1st, and a good young defenseman not named Power or Dahlin?

That would interest me more as a Canucks fan than a package with Power as the main piece. We need a center.

If he fails again i suppose he can go be a #2 center on a good team and have "success".
