Sorry, came to see about game talk and the "breakout seasons at 19" topic made my ears perk. Last season, Windsor had three players explode at age 19 - Christopoulos, Maillet, and Peer - and you could argue that Maggio was in that category, too, going from 85 to 111. It's not common but it can definitely happen with the right systems and linemates. Sometimes all a player needs is an opportunity and they take off.

Look like I am on crack because those are three guys that did exactly that! I wouldn’t include Maggio though. That isn’t out of the ordinary. Loads of guys improve 25 points when they are at the more star level the year previous.

I stand corrected.

That is another reason that we can not count the Petes out as a status quop team. It is possible that if they get the OYCR they will trade Beck and still be a power in the conference due to their systems and coaching.

Trade Beck for a producing ‘06 and possibly Mayer as well and try to keep the ball rolling

I don’t think anyone is suggesting status quo. The two sides are sell or buy. Status quo is never a good option if the goal is to be a contender. At the same time, status quo is not a good option if you feel a rebuild is required.

Status quo is common but there are elements that prevent them form being able to sell or buy. Missy is a great example of a team that could justify a buyer stance but can also justify a status quo stance. They have 21 returning players and are poised to be a very special team next year. Conversely, a team like Erie doesn’t have graduating players that would be considered high enough value to take advantage. They aren’t a strong enough team to buy.

The Soo
If you want to see what "competing every year" and "status quo" looks like in practice, I present the Soo Greyhounds the past 5 seasons.

We never rebuilt after our run in 2018 despite having plenty of opportunity to. In my opinion this has resulted in "good but not great hockey teams" that are always a few players short of a contender and don't have the assets to correct that.

2 x 2nd round exits
2 x missing the playoffs
1 cancelled season

  • 2018-19 Defeated Owen Sound Attack 4 games to 1 in conference quarter-finals.
Lost to Saginaw Spirit 4 games to 2 in conference semi-finals.
  • 2019–20 Out of playoffs.
  • 2020–21 Cancelled.
  • 2021-22 Defeated Guelph Storm 4 games to 1 in conference quarter-finals.
Lost to Flint Firebirds 4 games to 1 in conference semi-finals.
  • 2022–23 Out of playoffs.

We once again have a pretty good team this year but it's hard not to think that with a few extra 18/19 year olds and a few extra high draft picks we'd have less holes in our roster and have more assets for the deadline.

In my opinion "being competitive every year" is the equivalent of being sold magic beans.

Like I said in a previous post, one needs to qualify what it means to be competitive.

Everyone has a different opinion on it. I remember saying being >.500 is competitive. So, a 68-70 point season. Some said making the playoffs is being competitive. Some said you need to have a >.550% season (75+ Points).

There is a vast difference between 75 points and the ~60 points required to make the playoffs most seasons. There are usually around 8 teams sitting between those two points totals. In a 20 team league, thats 40% of the teams.

Any manager that suggests they always want to be competitive never qualifies that. They could very well mean we will always be in the playoffs. We will rarely, if ever, miss the playoffs. That’s not a very high bar to set. Or, they could mean they will never make a Championship push because doing so requires an exodus of assets to make the push. This relegates that team to continual 4-5 finishes (75-78 points) in their conference and the odd year where they make a Conference Final if the stars align. Never truly good but never truly bad. Vanilla results year after year.

So this concept of being competitive isn’t all that descriptive. People will pose an argument on here but they are potentially arguing using different metrics. Two guys could have a dispute but neither understand that the other has a completely different concept of what they feel qualifies as competitive. So, of course they disagree.

AND, I need to add…

The main reason why I discuss topics on this thread is because Petes fans are fun to have discussions with. Most are open minded and knowledgable enough to hold the conversation.

I can also poke a little fun here and there and you don’t get all flustered and offended.

I am an Ottawa fan so it is great having discussions like these with the opposition as opposed to neutral party teams. It is good to have a strong sense of what the opposition thinks about their team. It is far more interesting than simply being on our own team boards in mostly an echo chamber.

Thanks for the good discussions.

Side notes from last night -

Can we all just take a moment and appreciate Bowen.
I know we lost but that kid made some
Freaky saves last night !
It’s been a while since I was shocked by a goalie -and I was shocked by Bowen

Anyone hear what’s up with Page ? Is he a healthy scratch ?

Lovely tribute for Lorraine -every game I have been to she has been there -she held me as a baby and squeezed my cheeks as a kid and now as an adult I give her candies and help her around the PMC

No we don't

I'm presently banned from posting in the Soo Greyhounds forum and blocked by several regular posters because some take my opinions so personally. After half a dozen personal attacks against me were deleted earlier this week I don't exactly feel the love right now lol.

He made some good saves but you can argue 3-4 goals he let in should of been stopped

Bowen was fantastic last night and a lot of the goals were defensive collapses that left Bowen 1 on 1 with the Spitfires. Wish he stopped a couple of them but oh well. As some of you know, I am one of the bigger Sztuska fans but I think for the next couple weeks, Bowen should be the ‘starter’. It’s Bowens turn.

Quinton Pagé is out day to day with a lower body injury. Wilson said he could make it back in for either tonight or Monday

It's all good. We've disagreed on many things without devolving into ad hominems and I won't let a few play-pretend insiders get me down.

Just wanted to offer my insight on being "competitive every year" and what that has looked like from my perspective.

Unfortunately these boards can be hard to enforce rules when an outside MOD comes in. Not sure how it works but it should really only be Nelli27 handing out things like that because he would really be the only one who understands the OHL community. He’s always fair to us OHLers.

For future reference of the buy/sell debates for the Petes, here is the draft pick cupboard available to the Petes over the next four (tradable) drafts.

Last night vs Windsor, two observations. Windsor played like the Peterborough Petes against the Peterborough Petes. And it was just one of those games where the Petes were flat and faced a team that really needed a win.

Keep stockpiling 15th round picks
The Nia 15th* (* conditional) is actually a 14th tied to Runco, if he plays 30+ OHL games before the end of 2024 season it is upgraded to OSH 4th in 2024. Runco played 23 games for Niagara last year and has since been traded to Kitchener. Not sure exactly what details of that trade; Runco has 1A with the Burlington Cougars in the OJHL this season.

The KGN 15th is tied to the Kallaway Mercer trade, assume if Mercer played for the Petes the pick got returned to Kingston. KGN got NB 15th in the exchange. Mercer has aged out and playing at Laurier.

Totally agree -they played out game against us and we had no answer.
I hate losing like that -it reminds me of the Jody Hull years -when were outplayed physically and we had no answer
