Scott Arnold commenting on the game just said that “guys would not come near Simpson when we had Guryev”

It's always a good thing when you beat the best team in the league and even better when you crapped the bed the last two games. Nice rebound game for the Petes against an Ottawa team that looked slower and less organized than I've seen. They are still battling the flu much like the Petes did recently.

In classic Petes fashion, they allowed the other team to get back in it with a last minute scramble , a goal post in the dying seconds. OMG. Though the Petes were the better team tonight they still almost managed to give it all away. Gotta resolve that.

The fights after the game - hope no suspensions, probably not. I think Boucher was trying to get at somebody and Spearing held him. In a moment of genius as there were four scraps going on, YOUR TV decides right then to show a replay of the goal post shot. Anyway looks like McCoy had Pinelli pinned and Boucher got a hold of McCoy . Lockhart was in the middle of it too.

Great to see Purdeller continue to produce. Othmann better tonight, a helluva playmaker. Avon better too.

I don't really agree that we are missing Guryev for his physical play. He was a beast and I loved watching him but he cost us so much with penalties, getting kicked out of games leaving us with five defensemen and 3-5 game suspensions. He hasn't lived up to his potential yet but if he does, he could be a good player and not just with hits.

Guryev was a liability to our team.

He took unnecessary penalties and suspensions -but other teams were afraid of him.

Opponents would not start a ruckus or pull any shenanigans if there was a possibility that Guryev would be unleashed.

He was and is a loose cannon for sure but I feel his presence on our team (not on the ice) gave us some protection. Our boys could just play their game unscathed.

Now it’s open season on our lads

It's not the 80s any more. The Petes have lots of guys who stand up for each other, we saw that at the end of the game last night.

No we don't have the toughest player in the league anymore. We'll have to settle for the top 5 player in the league we traded him for I guess. Oh well.

It’s becoming more and more evident that the Petes need to upgrade Spearing. I hope Oke thinks the same way.

I would agree. Not that captains haven't been moved before (Bloom just a couple weeks ago), but I wonder how much loyalty they feel towards him and if it may turn out to be to a fault. As a side note I would really like to see David Jesus in a Petes uniform by the deadline

Any particular reason for him; size and/or offensive minded?

I think we should aim higher than Jesus. If we use a OA spot on a D it should be White or someone who can move the puck.

He's 6'4, a right shot and has 16 points (1 goal, 15 assists) in 21 games. To me he is a great balance between offensive and defensive minded that could compliment things nicely.

I believe that we should aim higher than Jesus too but it ultimately all depends on our asset usage. If we go all in on Shane Wright, most likely no Gavin White, and instead David Jesus as the OA d upgrade.

Jesus isnt an upgrade at all. Hes not even Niagara's top OA D on a team that is the worst in te league at keeping the puck out of their net

He actually is probabyl there worst. Best offensive OA D they have is Keane. Best defensive OA D they have is Ribau. +/- of 0 compared to Jesus -12 on the same exact team

I don't have too much interest in Ribau. Jesus is leading the IceDogs in points per game albeit 6 more games than Keane (21 to 15) but yes historically Keane has produced at a higher ppg clip. Was hoping Keane had more playoff experience but he would work for this team too

With the talk of adding Wright, I think there are 2 different directions the Petes may go...

Scenario #1
Petes add Wright and Roger from Kingston for approximately JVV, two 2nds, three 3rds and a 4th and a 5th

Is this enough of an add for the Petes?
Loaded at forward with the addition of Wright but can this defense win a championship?

Mayer (L)(03) – McCoy (R)(04)
Smith (L)(04) – Zanetti (L)(03)
Spearing (L)(OA) – Roger (R)(OA)
Leskovar (L)(04) – Guo (R)(05)

IMO when I look at this, I can’t see the Petes having two OA Dmen when neither one is an offensive threat.
I agree with others who mentioned that their primary target needs to be an offensive Dman, preferably RH.

Scenario #2
Petes add an offensive Dman and then add a solid forward at good value (this assumes Spearing is not upgraded).
There are more forward options in this scenario so for me, the Dman is more important.
  • Kyrou (03) (ERI) (RD).......best non-OA fit but at what cost?
  • Mintyukov (03) (IMP) (SAG) (LD).....LD but I’m sure the Petes would be OK with him anyways , does trading Purdeller make this tougher….I know it’s a business but Italian kid moving to CHL, misses training camp waiting for release from Austrian team, gets injured when he finally arrives but is playing well now after a slow start and has put up decent #’s in a bottom 6 role, maybe going to SAG and joining the Misa hype may be appealing?
+
  • Morrison (OA) (HAM) (C)
  • Hayes (OA) (HAM) (RW)
  • Watson (OA) (SOO) (RW)
  • Sedore (OA) (ERI) (LW)
OR
  • White (OA) (HAM) (RD)......best OA fit but at what cost?
  • Jesus (OA) (NIA) (RD).....seems like a good fit, is he a defensive liability or is -12 a reflection of the team more than the player
  • Keane (OA) (NIA) (RD).....possible fit, plays on PP, has offensive upside
+
  • Arcuri (03) (KGN) (LW)
  • Zito (03) (NIA) (C)
  • Winterton (03) (HAM) (RW)

Other possibilities below that I like but won't be targets for different reasons….
- Moore (OSH), Harrison (OSH)…….because OSHAWA
- Pinelli (KIT)……..wouldn’t he ask to go to Ottawa to play with his brother?
- Mailloux (LDN)…..Knights are on the upswing and likely won’t be trading him
- Smith (SAG)…….born in Saginaw and wears a letter; he isn’t going anywhere

I can’t see the Petes jumping the queue like they did by acquiring Othmann before a few other trades occurred. Oke will be in wait and see mode until he knows who exactly is available, who the competing buyers are and what it will cost to acquire these players.
In the meantime we can sit back and speculate

One option to keep an eye on… seeing if Tanner Dickinson is returned to the Soo to recover from his broken leg from last season.

Also, speaking of the Soo… if we go the offensive defenseman route… I really like what Tyler Savard could bring to the Petes in an energy/depth scoring role

This is a really great breakdown. I really want Shane Wright (and wouldn't complain if we got him), but scenario 2 is what I think the Petes should focus on. Our assets are already stretched pretty thin and by spreading out what we do have to a few different areas like a big d upgrade and possibly another quality OA is probably the best possible action considering the quality forward group we do already have. Both scenario 1 and 2 would probably wipe out the remaining 2 2nds and 3 3rds we have so its either we go completely all in on Wright (and maybe Roger), or we explore some combination of Morrison, White, Kyrou, Bressette, Keane, Jesus etc. Either way we we would be getting better so I'd be satisfied with both scenarios. This is where Oke makes his money!

From the rumours circling. I’m going to put my speculation the three players we bring in and they will wipe the cupboards bare is

Wright. For JVV melee 2x2nds 2x3rds

Hayes for dezote 3rd 4th

Kyrou for McCoy 2nd

I very much feel oke has to go all in. Put all the chips in. Next few years will be rough even if we stand pat.

I hate the fantasy GM stuff throwing teenagers names around like currency, the one thing I'll say though is that Kingston wants to host the memorial cup next season and I wouldn't be surprised if from their perspective any Shane Wright deal is around Lardis, not JVV.

Go big or go home!! Hard to say when the Petes will be this close again.

To bring in those 3 guys, players would definitely be going the other way.
These trades seem like good fits for players traded away.
Melee is from just outside of Ottawa so not too far from Kingston.
Dezoete is from Hamilton so that's a great fit.
McCoy would be a great fit with the strong group of young Otters....Spence, Terrance, Alfano, etc.

There is a conditional 2nd and 3rd that the Petes may still have from the trade they made to acquire Merkley from Guelph and they may still receive a conditional 2nd or 3rd from the Merkley deal to London. If all of these picks are Peterborough's the cupboard won't be completely bare but it will just be crumbs.

I'm not sure they will have enough players to ice a team next season but if these trades occur, here is the new Petes lineup:

Othmann(L)(03) – Wright (R)(04) – Stillman (R)(03)
Avon (L)(03) – Robertson (R)(03) – Hayes (R)(03)
Lardis (L)(05) – Dubois (R)(03) – Lockhart (R)(03)
Page(L)(05) – Panwar (L)(OA) – Purdeller (R)(04)
McCue(L)(05)

Mayer (L)(03) – Kyrou (R)(03)
Smith (L)(04) – Zanetti (L)(03)
Spearing (L)(OA) – Guo (R)(05)/Leskovar (L) (04)

Simpson (03)
Sztuska (04)
Rye (06)

I have thought about the Lardis interest before too and on Kingston's end it does make more sense from Mem Cup standpoint next year. I just personally don't see us making that move

I completely agree with the last part there. At this point it makes no sense to try to tread lightly and play the deadline conservatively. Like cleodog said the next few years are going to be full on rebuild regardless so lets ensure that we are as all in as it gets and truly go for it. Can't remember a team this good in a long time.

Here is our current draft pick cupboards. Important to remember that we can only deal 4 drafts into the future so the last year we have access to picks is 2026. Not necessarily a lot left to deal with but still a lot of improvements can happen to this team.

If that is correct you’re gonna have fun trying to turn 2 2nd’s, 4 3rd’s, 1 4th and 1 5th into Shane Wright, Christian Kyrou and Avery Hayes.

The Pete’s already retained a 2022 conditional pick from the Guelph deal so if the 2nd and 3rd were for the same condition then at least Oke will have those at his disposal as well.

I hate not knowing the conditions to these trades. How are we supposed to make accurate trade predictions?!
