Was it? I dunno. Seems really weird to sign Rutta a defensive specialist and then use Petry as your defensive specialist.
You won't get an argument from me that Rutta and POJ should be used more.

But Petry is being used exactly how he has been for years - a mix of offensive and defensive zone starts. It's been a bit more defensive zone because Letang gets a ton of offensive zone time.

Hextall is such a dumb f***. It’s great we have Petry locked up for two more years after this season. He will look even worse at age 37.

Regardless you're right that POJ has been a bright spot. And to a lot of people probably surprisingly so.

It's not like he hasn't looked good elsewhere and even for small stints in the NHL, though. Maybe he just needed a real chance. Plus like I keep saying til I'm blue in the face... dude is friggin 23. Not pushin' 30.

I dunno if I actually want them to move him at this point. I think they need to find a way to have BOTH he and Smith here.

What happened to the POJ sucks narrative? People were begging Sleepy to waive him when the season started. Reusing to give POJ away for free was one of sleepy’s few good decisions.

It’s almost like if you give younger players a chance, maybe - just maybe, they can play better than a career plug.

My god it was straight up infuriating to see people talking about getting rid of POJ for nothing. I get that Smith has had better performance in the NHL but you literally could have both of them on the team. There was straight up no reason to get rid of POJ other than idiocy.

I made a comic just for this but can't seem to find it.

Gettin' tough to ignore or deny Marino's play in NJ thus far. Dude looked varying degrees of meh to downright awful from the end of his rookie season through to when he was dealt. Maybe it's an adrenaline thing, being with a new team and getting a fresh start, etc. But it's lookin' a lot like ol' Todd just kinda f***ed up the kid's game. Oops.

If the Pens are out of it by Thanksgiving, the odds aren’t good of making the POs…If so, I hope they strongly entertain offers for Jarry, among others, and get some decent draft picks back

He's getting more defensive zone starts than he did in Montreal since like 2016. He was at his best in Montreal when Weber was taking the tougher defensive minutes. He struggled last year when those D-zone starts went up because Weber was no longer around.

I don't think it's accurate at all to say he's getting the same minutes. The only time he was getting this kind of usage since 2016 was last year and it coincided with his worst season.

Fire Hextall

Donating Marino, taking on a 35 year old Petry, re-signing DeSmith, overpaying Kap, effing up the cap, etc.

One bad decision after another this summer.

On the one hand I'm glad they identified the blueline as a problem because f*** it's terrible. On the other hand, maybe they traded from the wrong side.

I mean the reason they traded Marino was obvious. Anyone else was getting traded at extreme costs.

People may act like Marino bounces back here this season, but if he doesn’t we have him and Matheson hanging around for 4+ mil and term and not being effective in the top four unless somewhat sheltered.

I'm not disagreeing that Marino looked like dogshit for most of his tenure here. In retrospect, I think we should have just fired the coach if we were overhauling the blueline so drastically too.

Probably shouldn't have extended him before we did the overhauls too, tbh.

Petry is a huge bummer to me because I just... expected a LOT more. He kinda looks like a bag of wet turds most nights so far.

But I also agree with Gurgs that pining for Marino is kinda pointless because it's not like he was gonna do that HERE.

Jared McCann 2.0.

Funny enough the same clueless media people pining for both and ignoring the difference between team goals.

Team just trying to make the playoffs versus one trying to get past round 1.

Right. Both teams are in VASTLY different points in their arc. That is an important distinction.

I would love to have NJ Marino but he wasn’t going to be that here. Heck who knows what

Petry, Smith and even Poj are yet

The coaching staff needs to get their act together and actually work with the defense. Reirdens claim to fame was the work he did with letang. I letang keeps struggling. Todd’s got crap to stand on

Don't worry. Mike said he was gonna put a lot of extra time and effort into getting Kapanen coached up this year and boy howdy can you see the results. Just imagine what he and Todd can do with the defense.

Marino is having success because he’s surrounded by size and talent. He’s essentially the smallest guy on their blue line. Last season he was one of the bigger ones on ours outside of Dumo and Pettersson who are wet noodles size wise.

Notice how Pettersson and POJ are having success due to their line mates?

Go read my posts with Jersey fans. I said Marino could find his game again it paired with Graves or Siegs. And he’s paired with Graves and doing well. No surprises.

Again, didn’t you praise Matheson constantly last year?
