It's not. It's why teams are loathe to give out 1sts, and trade 2 2nds to get into the 1st round.

We gave up an irreplaceable, premium asset. We presumably want to try to contend during the rest of the core's time here. This trade does absolutely nothing to help that, now or later.
Nah. Guentzel is not Pasta or Nylander. If he was I’d agree.

Think Jake is super replaceable and his value to this team has already peaked. They won a cup without him. Not irreplaceable at all imo.

When I read this earlier, it made me feel better. Not "we got can't-miss prospects" better but "we probably got as good as we could have gotten from the market" better for trading 45 days (from Sunday's return-from-IR date) of Jake's contract.

At this point, I'm just glad it's over. We got assets for him. Not brilliant assets, but ones that are interesting enough.

Agreed, he's a great talent for sure but no one was gutting their prospect pool unless he was coming with term. Hopefully Eller gets dealt and Ponomarev comes up for us. Boys what's done is done, time to find some positivity. These are YOUNG players that we need because our legs are cooked and we need their excitement and fight. As a fanbase, it's our job to welcome these kids as best possible. I'm rooting for them. f*** Bunting tho, can't ride with that

I think people also forget that Guentzel himself didn't really start popping off until he was like 21 in the NCAA. I don't think you can count on that type of development and it's why I'm not the biggest fan of the trade, but it's certainly possible and they got 3 guys that are kind of in line with where Guentzel was at their ages.

Definitely hoping that one can take that step or this trade won't look great, but if 1 turns into a top 6 player and 1 turns into a regular NHLer, I think that would be a solid return for the Pens.

Guentzel
  • Age 19 in NCAA : 7G 27A 34P in 37 games
  • Age 20 in NCAA : 14G 25A 39P in 36 games
  • Age 21 in NCAA : 19G 27A 46P in 35 games
  • Age 22 in AHL : 21G 21A 42P in 33 games
Koivunen
  • Age 19 in Liiga : 11G 18A 29P in 53 games
  • Age 20 in Liiga : 12G 16A 28P in 52 games
  • Age 21 in Liiga : 21G 34A 55P in 57 games
    • Really took a big step this year in a man's league
Ponomarev
  • Age 19 in AHL : 3G 7A 10P in 11 games
  • Age 20 in AHL : 24G 22A 46P in 64 games
  • Age 21 in AHL : 8G 21A 29P in 39 games
Lucius
  • Age 18 in NCAA : 11G 23A 34P in 34 games
  • Age 19 in NCAA : 12G 19A 31P in 32 games
Lucius leads his team in scoring but his skating sucks. Feels like a quad A guy.

Koivunen kinda reminds me of Heinen from highlights. Hopefully a little more effective.

I think Pono is the prize here. Could be a really good middle 6 C that’s cost controlled.

Also, I don't know if it means anything, but Ponomarev and Koivunen have ELCs, whereas none of Morrow, Blake, or Nadeau do. Morrow in particular is a risk to walk as he is finishing his junior year in the NCAA.

I also like how all the prospects aren’t good skaters. Because that’s not important in today’s NHL.

Imagine we got him and he walked...lol

For a third round pick, those freshman and sophomore numbers were really good. Plus I think he was either the team leader or close to it. I could look it up but I'll just let someone correct me if I'm wrong.
My point is not that Guentzel was bad. My point is that the prospects they got are comparable to Guentzel at their ages.

A little harder to do directly with Koivunen and Ponomarev given the maturity of the leagues they are in, but Lucius is comparable to Jake's years in NCAA at his age. I don't know if Guentzel was the team leader those years, but Lucius is in fact leading his team in scoring.

Oh? Do you remember what our wing situation looked like pre-Guentzel?

Who are we getting to replace him?

After thinking about it a bit, I mean, at least there's upside there. Unlike last year's Granlund gong show, the point of which I still do not understand to this day. I know, it's the lowest of low bars, but the Guentzel trade easily sails over it.

this is more like the jager deal. quantity for quality. was at least hoping to get a jake replacement. oh well mabey we get lucky this time and one of them hits

What sucks here today is that we already used all 3 spots for buyouts/retention

So we can't keep anything on guys like Eller, Smith .... Not good
We have another spot. Why tie up a retention spot for multiple years for the likes of Eller, Smith, etc.? So we can maybe get a 3rd round pick instead of something lower....

Well not only for the better pick, heck maybe Snith is movable but Eller I'm pretty certain no one wants at full cap hit for next season.

i guess i only had one thought when i saw the trade, and someone can tell me why it's a dumb take:

every time i read someone talk about a Carolina prospect, the first thing someone said was, "they'll be ready for the NHL next year." This was said about 8 different players, including 2 of the 3 we got.

1) Are people really overrating these players? Or is Carolina's deep prospect pool one of the best in history?

2) If these reports are accurate and all of these players are on the cusp of the NHL, and the Canes don't have an AHL affiliate to put players who are ready/very close, but not yet surefire studs, where were they going to put these 8 players next year?

So basically, my take: we gave the Canes a star winger and we did them a massive player by taking 3 players they didn't have room for?

I have no issue with Bunting and the 1st/2nd. I have an issue with the 5th. It shouldn't have the same conditions attached to it as the 1st/2nd. Shouldn't have been a 5th. Should have been a 1st, 2nd, OR 3rd, and conditioned to Jake re-signing.
