I think it's the other GMs telling Dubas to pound sand, and Dubas sitting around with his pouty face on which is why he hasn't done -anything- yet despite having a half dozen players that could be dealt in order to help this team moving forward.
I don't believe this is the case.

So here's the question: Should Dubas accept a lower offer for Guentzel in exchange for trading him? And if so, why?
Here’s the thing: Dubas isn’t getting this for Jake and he’s not getting Nikishin lol…so if he doesn’t move a little, Jake won’t be traded…

Getting Nikishin back is an interesting game changer for the Penguins. If he comes in and can take a LD slot next year, you can trade Pettersson for a young forward such as Holtz or maybe Mercer from NJ. The if you don't get that young forward back for Jake, we need to make additional moves to get one.

even if Carolina would trade him (they won’t) he still has a year left on his KHL deal.

If Dubas isn’t getting the ridiculous offer he wants that no other GM will pay for a rental, and Jake says he wouldn’t consider signing until the off-season, then yes, a thousand times yes and he’d be stupid not to…he’ll still get a first and a really good prospect..

"wait until summer" is a nuanced turn-of-phrase. If he's with the Penguins, he gets April, May, June to think it over and sign whenever. But that could also mean "I want to wait until July 1st to see what else is out there".

I'm not sure which puts him and us in a better position. If he wants to come back, he likely knows the basis of a deal and he knows it will likely be there on July 1st even if we trade him. You just have to worry about the potential team he goes to licking his butthole for an additional four changing his mind.

I would not consider Kakko to be part of the package from the Rangers, but taking him to make the cap work is a no-brainer. You could always not qualify him and let him walk. Best case scenario is he looks like he fits here and you have a potential 3rd liner with some upside as a RFA.

No, you don't.

You sign him and try him. If it doesn't work, you trade him. You don't let Kakko walk. That would be a horrendous move by a GM.

If he goes and we want to bring him back in the summer, the price goes up. Other teams will be making rich offers on July 1. Hard to take a discount when you actually see what else is out there.

A smart GM would not wait on him…also you’re not negotiating then from a position of power…the position of power is now, with the trade deadline…after that, he holds all the cards if you don’t want to pay thru the nose…

Speaking of Nikishin, my thought is this and it won’t be surprising: we got a two time Norris winner and 100 point defenseman and even if we got the best Dman not in the NHL right now, if Sullivan is coach next year, he will be useless.
