So, I think we can say Dubas was at least as bad as Hextall.
I feel like that's fine to say but with the caveat that the assets this team has had to burn to keep "fixing" the roster to make it "more Sullivan proof" has been the issue for 7 seasons and it's left this team in this state where the GM can only do so much.

Can't? Or won't?

They amount to the same thing ultimately, but from a philosophical point of view I'm not sure which is worse.
Hundred percent.

Today's presser has me feeling like he won't. That keeping Sullivan around is good for whatever mental game that f***er is playing.

...likely that he wants to just keep running this thing to the ground and has no intentions of building a competitive roster. Which would be on brand for making zero moves this year.

Unpopular opinion - the low action on our side was the best decision. I'd have rather re-signed Jake, but less-than-expected moves isn't the worst thing. The prices were unbelievably low and we sold our two UFAs that had value. Smith/Eller/Acciari will have more value in the summer when teams have cap space. There was no urgency to trade them for scraps today.

In that he's too cowardly/stupid to fire Sullivan or call the era dead. For sure.

We'll see how he does with the post-Sid shit. Not confident, but that's all that matters. This team's just circling the runway, waiting for Sid to retire after 2025-26 and allow the era to fully die. Until then, he's just gonna keep the team hostage cuz he wants to play in one final Olympics and the team's too cowardly/stupid to say "Okay, well deal with a rebuild in the meantime or tell us where you want to be dealt."

Yup. If they keep Sullivan and these are his moves. He's basically Hextall.

I think we can safely say ... the 2 scoring lines and 2 turtle lines do not work and we need to modernize our coaching philosophy.

The funny thing is the GM can fire the coach, especially when the GM is also the President of Hockey Operations, which oversees the GM.

I just think it’s so funny that all these pie in the sky nerds concocted this whole story in their heads of “yeah Jake was in on the trade and wanting to get prospects & picks with the understanding he was coming back on July 1st!!!!1! He was a penguin secret op!1!1!” I wonder how all these dorks J6 charges and court dates are going…:rolleyes::rolleyes:

And the ownership group of said team fell over themselves abandoning a weeks-long search and interview process to send a private jet to fly him into town for a wine, dine, $69 million deal.

If Dubas wanted to fire Sullivan, he'd have fired him and had nobody to question his decision. Sully's owed like $25 million, which is something like 0.036% of FSG's $7 billion net worth.

Dubas just admires and respects Sullivan too much. He absolutely thinks he's a great coach in the midst of unfortunate circumstances.

I agree but in this situation alone - FSG negotiated directly with Mike Sullivan and there's likely a mandate of "IF you want to fire Mike Sullivan, you need to approach us first" in his contract or when they hired him because this is a coach that the ownership has been on the record of being very enamoured with. To the point of asking him directly to help with the GM search, WBS, Development of WBS and etc.

while who knows if Dubas will move on from Sullivan this summer (I doubt it) I do think that come next fall if the team isn't playing for him (see caps game) he's gone before christmas
