Can't? Or won't?

They amount to the same thing ultimately, but from a philosophical point of view I'm not sure which is worse.
I think we all know he can't.

When you have an ownership that is as in love with their coach as FSG is, you think when Dubas tells FSG he's firing the coach they're not "Yeah we talked about this Kyle, if you want Mike gone, you'll go the way of JR and Hextall/Burke."

If Firkus, Lysell, Blake or Cowan was one of the guys in the deal how would you feel? Just sayin I've seen Koivunen ranked above them. Doesn't guarantee anything and it varies depending on where you look and who you listened to I suppose. I've come back from the abyss and after losing my mind I'm not hating this.

I agree but in this situation alone - FSG negotiated directly with Mike Sullivan and there's likely a mandate of "IF you want to fire Mike Sullivan, you need to approach us first" in his contract or when they hired him because this is a coach that the ownership has been on the record of being very enamoured with. To the point of asking him directly to help with the GM search, WBS, Development of WBS and etc.
I mean I get that, but Dubas claims he took the job because he was offered complete freedom to do what he wants. He probably likes Sully, because Kyle Calculations Dubas is dumber than a horse-kicked toddler.

I get keeping Smith with the prices today, and because other teams might balk at the extra year/have reservations about his cap hit.

But why not get something for Ned?

That doesn't make sense.
Could mean they want to resign him. And why wouldn't they? He's been great for us.
Unpopular opinion - the low action on our side was the best decision. I'd have rather re-signed Jake, but less-than-expected moves isn't the worst thing. The prices were unbelievably low and we sold our two UFAs that had value. Smith/Eller/Acciari will have more value in the summer when teams have cap space. There was no urgency to trade them for scraps today.
Yeah Dubas talking about that makes me think once the season is over and cap goes up, they will pick up talks with teams that were interested.

Sounds like he's wanting Pono to be on the roster next year and Koivunen to challenge. You have Poulin, Yager, and a couple randos in the mix as well so I have to imagine he will prioritize moving one or two existing guys.

$$$$$$$omething probably intere$$$ted him. Not quite $$$$ure what it i$$$.
Kyle wanted more autonomy in Toronto and Shanahan said no, so he thought he was going to get it in Pittsburgh with his new titles and what not and ended up being in a far worse situation with a coach that has more power than he does.

I mean, you gotta laugh at the comedy of it all.

OK can you fill me in on these guys a little more?
Well he's young and the Pens need a serious infusion of youth at ELC with all the Greybeards haling a lot of cash! Not sure if Koivunen will ever be a top 6 forward but has the potential
See for yourself
And the thing with Koivunen is he's signed and has progressed all 3 years since he was drafted in the 2nd Round by Carolina in 2021. Is he ready for the NHL? That's the question?

That Hertl deal is f***ing insane. Vegas got Hertl AND two 3rd rounders for a 1st rounder in '25 and their 1st round draft pick in '23 (Edstrom).

Because instead of trading for an albatross he dealt a rental and restocked some of the prospect cupboards.
And could have actually made more moves because people wanted more of our vets. Why not trade Eller? We are absolutely not in "the playoff race", despite his feverent insistance to the contrary.

I mean, for all of Hextall's faults he made the playoffs and only didn't make them last year by a single game.

Trolling aside I didn’t think Dubas did a bad job. Hertl really didn’t get much more than Jake and I prefer the Pens return.
Jake got more as a rental but I have to think the 7 extra years and Hertl being 30 shifts value a little bit. Hertl with 2-3 extra years would have got more for sure.

See while I like to mock Kyle as well, there's the whole thing of him wanting to fire Babcock and getting permission from Shanahan to do it after a bad start and the Marner situation, but even in that situation - he had to go to Shanahan and get that move approved. In Pittsburgh, he has to go to Ownership to approve a Sullivan firing and that is tough because now you're asking ownership to fire a bloke they themselves extended and made the highest paid coach.

I don't think Kyle's done a bad job considering he had to inherit Sullivan for the foreseeable future.

I think your hatred of Sullivan still being here is projecting made up stories into your head.

That presser was hysterical…this team is not competing for awhile and he knows it…no one asked him about the coach again but it’s very clear he’s not going to fire Sullivan

I don’t understand not trading Nedjelkovic but I completely understand not trading Smith. Prices stunk and you still have him for next year, flip him when the return would be better. They paid a 3rd for him, eating half of his deal only to get a 3rd back would be awful.

Overall, it’s fascinating how low prices were at the deadline. Look at the Hertl deal, that seems insanely cheap for the caliber of player he is. Hard to get too critical about the Guentzel deal at this point after seeing the rest of the deals at the deadline.

He went from being told what to do by his boss to being told what to do by his subordinate.

Imagine getting the manager's job at Walmart and having to run everything by the stockboy first.
