Just like I posted last night, this team is the same team they've been for years. They'll go on a 9 game winning streak where people will think they're a top contender again, only for them to lose in the 1st round.

That's just what they are at this point. They have the talent to be super good, but they're also old and flawed where they'll look terrible for stretches.

They had 20 shots.

if by outplayed you mean converted 2 odd man rushes and then we’re outshot the rest of the period. Yes.

Badly outplayed?

ha.

They forced a ton of turn overs as evidenced by 6 2 on 1s. They had much better chances through 2 periods. Obviously in the 3rd the story changed.

Q: What did the pens do outside of those 6x 2on1's?
A: Not much

I thought Pittsburgh badly out played, and out coached Buffalo for the first two periods. When their legs got heavy from playing last night they couldn't keep up their system which looks exhausting for the wingers.

They certainly baited Buffalo into dangling turnover after turnover and generated many 2 on 1s.

Higher danger chances
Pens = 7
Sabres 4

Regular scoring chances
Pens = 21
Sabres = 23

It was a fairly even game. Sabres had a lot of shots, but most of them had no business going into the net. It's another game that came down to poor goaltending for the Pens

Pens had pretty much next to zero sustained pressure the entire night they were living off the rush the entire game.

I’d like to see the possession numbers. Seemed like Pitt had 3 minutes of sustained offensive time in the last 30 minutes

Petry is garbage. That trade should be the final nail in Hextall’s coffin. The Pens desperately need a real GM and a new coaching staff.
Hate to break it to you but the next GM and coach Pittsburgh has will be moving every contract they can and tearing down for a full rebuild

Enjoy the playoffs while you can because once you start the drop you wont see them for likely a decade with how barren your pool of prospects and tradeable talent are

Penguins played smart against the Sabres and exposed our AHL defensemen. Pretty good game.

I wouldn't say they outplayed Buffalo. Buffalo had a few breakdowns and let Pittsburgh have a couple two on ones that they converted on. Playwise, they were pretty close the first two periods. Buffalo dominated the third.

The issue is clearly a lack of truculence. Maybe the Pens can reacquire Ryan Reaves...
The issues are plenty . The answers are few from these boneheads. They built an old slow soft team with questionable goaltending. They decided Marino was the weak link and traded for petry who looks lost in LALA land ..didn't address the goaltending situation. Didn't add any size and grit to the bottom 6. Rutta has been good and Rakell but they can't make up for Dumoulin pettersen Carter Kapanen mcginn letang jarry desmith and Sullivan.

It seems bizarre people are targeting Petry.
Why he was brutal. He left Canada a minus 4 while directly taking multiple penalties that lead directly to losses. He hasn't been an upgrade over Marino at all and once you stand back and realize he is the second highest paid penguin I makes perfect sense.

He was the pens second worse D for which seems like every game. Only Dumoulin struggles more ....they can't trade him....they can't really bring in another to replace him either ...

Desperately need a new coach

But stretches like these is where I gain respect for pitts fans if they stay. The stereotype is pitts fans only became fans due to Crosby, so if they suck for awhile and the fans stay it’ll be good for the brand overall. Gotta experience lows to fully appreciate highs. two cups back to back is nothing to scoff at (and another with two back to back finals) that’s far more than most get to experience

A new coach could right the ship but the question is who

And for the first half of the game that was the story. buffalos offensive time lead to odd man rushes going the other way.

I don’t think Pittsburgh was better in the 3rd. That’s why I said through two periods.

Buffalo adjusted and changed their puck distribution from the point. Pittsburgh had 3 players well above the dots all game on the back check attacking the points and it was leading to turnovers.

Sabres - Pens
CF: 54 - 42
FF: 42 - 28
SF: 33 - 21
SCF: 23-21

HDCF:4-7

Sabres won the possession game from start to finish. Pens won high danger chances, entirely off of the rush/odd man breaks. A pretty low event game for high danger chances for both teams.

I didn't think DeSmith was bad.

1st goal was a heavily screened wrister from just outside the slot.
2nd goal was a 100mph slapper from the face off dot on the PP
3rd goal was the only bad one. Power from pretty far back towards the blue line juked DeSmith so hard he fell over and dropped his stick, then he passed it cross ice to Olofsson for a wide open shot from the top of the faceoff circle.
Goal 4 was a 2 on 1 fast break back door.
