LeBrun: Patrik Laine wants a fresh start and trade out of Columbus

I mean, I'd make an offer from Philadelphia, but I can't imagine being willing to offer Columbus anything other than a "get this guy off our hands" price, and I can totally understand the Jackets not being interested at that point. (Specifically, Ristolainen and Atkinson on retention to bring the total cost down to Laine's salary or as close as I can get. Cap-neutral this season, save a few million next season, then in the third season you have Risto, for what that's worth. He's markedly better than he was in Buffalo, but he's still Rasmus Ristolainen, for all that.)

Fair and understandable - and yeah, we've got no reason to go for something like that. No matter how much we dearly love Atkinson and miss him. :(

Waiting for the 'Yeah but the eye test shows he was the offensive driver" response.
the really cool and fun thing about posting rate metrics on the internet is that you don't need to bring up the sample size lol

laine only played 18 games last year, most of which was:
  1. out of position (at center)
  2. after suffering a nasty concussion
  3. played alongside a literal 18-year-old (fantilli)

i'm not saying he was good in those 18 games (he wasn't) but you don't get to act like a stathead while ignoring painfully obvious statistics 101 concepts like "sample size" and "lurking variables"

let's look at an actual representative sample (55 games) from the 22-23 season, during which he was:
  • 1st in CF% (by over two full percentage points!)
  • 1st in FF%
  • 1st in SF%
  • 5th in xGF%
  • 1st in SCF%
  • 5th in HDCF%
  • 2nd in G/60
  • 2nd in pA/60
  • 3rd in A/60
  • 1st in P/60 (0.3 ahead of gaudreau)
  • 2nd in IPP
  • 1st in GF/60
  • 3rd in xGF/60
  • 1st in GA/60 (!!) (by a whopping 0.5 GA/60)
  • 1st in GF% (by almost six full points lol)
he was – by a significant margin – their best forward in 22-23. his 5v5 scoring rate metrics were in line with guys like jordan kyrou, andrei vechnikov, sebastian aho, kyle connor and mika zibanejad lol

when healthy, he's a very good player. and the health concerns are 100% fair to bring up, but misunderstanding rudimentary statistical concepts to weave a clearly false narrative that he's a bum isn't.

Why does Chicago take a salary dump and move down in the draft?

I don't get it.. Winnipeg is far from a big market but the media is very big market-like. He didn't like playing 2nd fiddle and wanted to lead a team. Now he's got the chance in one of the lowest pressure environments there is, and he can't even do that.

Buddy wants to be a huge fish in an ocean, but he can't even be a medium fish in a tiny pond
Honestly his best years were in Winnipeg...since leaving he has been mediocre. He had the supporting cast there to have a great career but chose to ask for a trade.

To be fair, I wouldn’t really wanna play in Winnipeg or Columbus either.

Weird career, hope he can turn it around again. I think he’ll still find a good groove if he can return healthy and happy.
Why, did you enjoy your time there? I assume you've spent considerable time to be able to make such a bold statement.

What cave have you been living in? How's the rent?

50% retained Laine is about $4.3m, I'd expect a couple 1st rounders if I'm trading this player at $4.3m:

But... But... But... something something fortnite....

This whole argument again... Who in their right mind would want to live in Columbus. Oh wait...

growing? yes. any places to live? no. seems like a short term gain if people can't really stay

"Dixon said right now central Ohio is struggling with housing. He said this is something other cities the same size are doing better with."

What?

Have you been to Columbus? Have you been to the arena district? There's no shortage of places for wealthy professionals to live in the city.

Edit: Dubinsky must really be struggling then..

"if so many people want to move there, how come demand for housing outweighs supply?"

oh yeah man. got our asses!

Depends on the cap structure on any given team. Cap did grow $4.5M and probably grows more than the projected $92M for the following season. Lots of teams can fit this in and you better bet a contract is going the other way too.

If it was still a Covid flat cap, his value would be very bad. With the little raise and more to come, it's not as big of an issue as it was.

I value cap flexibility highly. Sure, you can sign him and have a better chance to be cap compliant with the rising cap, but it's the opportunity cost that I focus more on.

that doesnt help the case. The EV offense and defense kills the value. Teams dont need a PP shooting specialist as a 9 million dollar cap hit then add in he has played 130 games in the last 3 seasons.

Please stop telling people this. There are enough dopes here already.

Can we just close this thread? There's nothing left to talk about, and it's devolved into people from 2000 miles away shitting on Ohio for the memes.
