4 in 9 projects to 36 pts over a full season. For 9mm a year no thanks. I go back and forth on re-signing him but as of today long term I think the Jackets can better spend that 9mm. Realistically I think Jarmo re-signs him and we can debate that for years to come.
In october Matthews scored 2p in 6 games. That projects 27 points over a full season. For 11,5m a year no thanks...

I think you get my point with out me having to do this for every player in nhl. Just a terrible argument for any kind of decision.

Yeah it also projects for 0 goals too, but we know that wouldn’t happen so I’m not going to put much stock in it. If a 36 PT pace is his worst, and a 90 or whatever it was at when he was hot is his ceiling, then I’m good with paying for that.

I get it. I was merely commenting on CBJ's comment that 4 in 9 wasn't bad. That being said his tendency to be red hot or ice cold seems a bit troublesome when trying to build a SC contender. If he gets red hot in the playoffs great if he goes the other way...I understand why people want him long term; I also get why he should go somewhere else.

I mean for a cold streak that's pretty average. Good players go through 0,5p/gp cold streaks all the time. I get that it's sticks out more for Patty because he has a history of very long and ice cold streaks, but the current one seems like a very average cold streak (for now at least).

Two things happened that dropped his production towards the end of the season. Once the thought of playoffs went away, and Boone got injured. Mainly Boones injury because it's so easy for defenses to focus on Laine.

I think the main problem was that Boone plays in the front of the net, win battles around the boards. Roslovic is skill, speed but he isn't too good in it. The Nyquist -- Jenner -- Laine line was ideal. Also every players has bad time.

Robí to vtedy, keď neexistuje žiadna náhrada, ktorá by mohla hrať úlohu, ktorá je potrebná. Roslovic nemôže byť tým chlapom a podporovať líniu tak, ako to robí Boone.
I think Patrik doesn't need a creative center like Kent Johnson or a creative winger like Jake Voracek. He can create chances for you and his partners without them. IMHO partners like Gus or Boone are more important for him. Both are hard working players with very good play without the puck, backchecking. And not grinders like Sean Kuraly but ones have quite good hockey vision, especially Gus. That's why I wanted to move Justin Danforth to Patrik and Gus and not Roslo.

I think having Boone and more meaningful games would help Laine. But do you think it is just a coincidence that Laine has fizzled out at the end of every year? Random bad things happen to him each season? We don't have to make these sorts of excuses for every player.

Can you extend someone at an AAV lower than their qualifying offer?

For example could we offer 6 years at 7 AAV?

Yes for sure, if Laine would agree with it.

Personally, despite my frustrations with Laine's disappearing act, I'm not at the point where I think he is worth less than the $7.5m he is paid now.

He has 5 points in his last 10. Voracek leads the team with a whopping 7. Bjorkstrand for example has 2 (but both goals). Laine has team leading 31 shots on goal during that stretch, Bjorkie has 29, which is good, those are the guys you want shooting the puck, they just really aren't going in for them at the moment. I don't like Laine shooting at 0% and he had a couple games where I honestly didn't like at all how he was playing, but that said if going 0.5p/g is the low, I don't see what the fuss is about.

I like how nonchalantly people are willing to throw Laine away. And how they think they can spend that money elsewhere. Like we are the NYR or TML or something.

Ok, who do we sign? Who is willing to come here now, and who would be willing to come here after moving Laine? Think UFA centers are lining up to play with Voracek and Bjorkstrand?

This coming from the same fanbase that supported Nash unconditionally? And continues to do so till this day? But Laine, not even worth Foligno money....

It's all good, can't wait to see this board go into full on meltdown emo mode when he signs a contract similar if not greater than Werenski (5years @ 9.875 - 10m). And yes, I stated that as fact, but when you look beyond the numbers and realize the situation Jarmo appears to be in (#2ova, potential star, cap space, potential replacements & Bjorkstrand's season, the way Jarmo handled his fathers death, job security if he trades him for lesser parts, ETC.) I think it's pretty obvious what the team is going to do.

The real question is, what is Laine going to do. If he goes arbi and walks; I think I will just stop coming around here all together.

To salary. Do you really think Werenski would get his contract in Rangers, Colorado for example? No. Maximum $8.500.000. So, if without emotions, his salary could be about $9.000.000.

To his play. I think it's really good we don't need to get a super playmaker to him. Yes, his salary will be high but his partners not.

I just know he's highly competitive and when the team is out of the race, it affects him. He's had some injuries towards the ends of season before too like the 2nd season where he blocked a shot with his skate and had a couple of games off and then had a drought for 10 games. He showed up in playoffs though.

Boone definitely helps Laine get more chances, he's the best center we got right now

I don`t know if he`s the best but he has very good chemistry with Laine. True I`m suprised it.

I guess it all depends on how close you think this roster is competing.

If you don’t think we’re that close, why would you want to pay 8+ million on a one dimensional sniper who has effort issues in his past? By the time we’re ready to compete he could have ran himself out of town by then. Or he could be sinking your payroll for future stars you could pick up who fit better.

Or you could be like me, and think this team isn’t too far away. I’m all in favor of signing Laine as long as it makes sense. This isn’t a panarin situation where you hand him a blank check. If Laine is nice and is willing to accept 8-8.5 million per year in exchange for more/less years? I’m good with it. Let’s do it. If he’s going to hard line and say he wants 9.5+ and max years, that’s when you get nervous.

If Laine accepts his QO, because of a hard negotiation tactic or whatever reason, you have to trade him. You can’t let him walk for nothing. I don’t think this happens though. That’s like a last resort for him as i believe he genuinely wants to stay.

We've seen bigger swings on other players in Columbus. I recall Atkinson going 26 games with 1 goal a few years ago. Granted he wasn't a $9MM player but scorers are streaky, doesn't seem to matter who. I have no reservations with signing Laine to a long term deal as an elite talent. He still is that. This team is far from a finished product and, for me, he's shown he can play in any environment. As the play around him improves he may also up his game. When CBJ was playing well, Laine appeared more willing to make a play other than shooting the puck or trying to stick handle through 5 guys. He's a good distributor but that seems to go away when a team struggles... less struggles as a team = better Laine?

Laine is a 35-40 goal player who tallies points at a .80-.90 rate. If you look at that value on the Jackets, it’s easily $8.5M for me. How much higher than that becomes the more challenging evaluation. He brings a lamp-lighting threat we don’t otherwise have. I’m hoping to see Laine continue his career in Columbus.

So how would you describe a player that plays hard every game, even at the end of the year? Not competitive?

To be clear, this discussion isn't about Laine for me, but about the excuse factory fans have set up for him.

I think players should play hard the whole season and not only if it's chance to play PO.

Easy to say after a 3 point game, but I just don't see anything to be concerned about. I thought he had a good game against Detroit as well, though he only had 1 assists to show for it. He did also make several bad plays in that game, but he also fought really hard (and succesfully) to rectify those mistakes as they happened. Seemed a bit overly loose game from him against DET but at least he was very visible all night :)

Before the Detroit game there was maybe a 3 or so games I really didn't like his play much at all because he seemed either disengaged or exhausted, but I was also willing to cut him some slack, he really did make quite a heroic effort for the playoff push and maybe he just needed a mental reset after the disappointment. He at least talked the talk after last game to wanting to finish the season "the right way". To me it seems maybe his last season left a mark and people quite easily see it as the sky falling if he has 2 bad games in a row.

DET and MTL aren't exactly power houses though... but OTOH with the Jackets current situation at C, they give a more level playing field :D I don't have much faith in Roslo vs Bergeron match-up like it was vs BOS, though Laine and Roslo are starting to show signs of finding some chemistry and besides being hot, Roslovic is also showing again some signs of finding his overall game. Laine putting together his playmaking is good for the future, he's been really well rounded offensively this season, even his cycle game isn't looking half bad. I'm half convinced he has changed his stick, either blade profile or flex, or both.

I looked at a couple of his shots during his goal drought. One hit the goalie‘s leg. He had the goalie completely beat but it was a couple of inches too low and hit his leg pad. Two inches higher and it was a fantastically placed shot on an absolute rocket. Those are the kind of shots you hit when you are hot and miss when you are not.

I think part of his streakiness is that the game is so easy for him at times. This either leads him to try things he shouldnt or occasionally develop a nonchalant attitude. Being around guys like Danforth and Blankenburg is probably good for him. Interesting fact - Laine and Blankenburg were born within a month of each other.

I personally appreciate it when players give their best effort every night despite the circumstances but as a realist I know that doesn't happen and players always squeeze more out when the games actually matter. They get pegged as playoff performers and lauded for that, even though you could ask where was the effort level all season?

I haven't watched each recent game, but Laine doesn't look bad out there. Since Boone he just hasn't had the same kind of room and can't be as effective in scoring as he could if the linemates were more of a threat. At least he is making great plays. Jack heating up should help carrying the load and open Laine up more
