this is entirely hypothetical but what would happen if Jarmo traded say Nyquist or Jake for cap space to sign Laine but Laine decided to not sign with us and then Jake/Gus are gone just like that? there’s no possible way a player of Laine’s caliber could just be like “yeah, i’m signing for sure” and then the GM trades a player(s) for cap space and the player decides not to sign, right?

Laine can’t be signed until the cap space is cleared, yeah? so hypothetically what would happen if that did occur? just got me thinking. lol

hope I made sense.
Because of the 10% thing already mentioned, Jarmo likely wants to get the Laine deal signed first to really see where he is with the cap before making any moves to reduce.

I'd assume the ideal time to make a trade is after Laine signs, but before the deal is announced to the public.
Yeah, I hate to be overly optimistic but it feels like everything is probably done on the Laine front except the details (years of NMC vs NTC, dollar structure) but Jarmo isn't going to shoot himself in the foot from a negotiating standpoint by inking the final that he is officially over the cap and needs help to get under. I think someone posted a translated interview (relevant quote below) on here already but he is probably just working to get the best and final offers from his trade options. I will say the longer this goes on the more it feels like it might be Bjork+ in a real hockey trade rather than simply trying to clear the cap by shipping out Nyquist.

Kekäläinen for Yle Sport: "Yes, we will solve it and we have many options on the table here. Other clubs also know our situation and we have already received many contacts asking what we are doing. So yes, we will solve this."

All can be happen but I don't see any reason for his trade.
Right out of the Lou Lamoriello playbook.
Not really, since it would have been a trade price increase whereas in this case, in that case the reporter joked that the contract was signed, Lou just didn't want to make it public on September.

If I'm Laine I'd prefer to sign for at least 2 years because a 1 year deal just gets me traded. And while UFA often means a bigger payday, I don't think it does in this case. Maybe Laine thinks it does but I don't. I don't think there is a GM in the league that values him higher than Jarmo does. If he gets traded then that takes away potentially his highest bidder (Jarmo) and takes him away from a strong situation with a coach he can work with and now an A+ playmaker that can pump up his value. If he's traded he loses all of that, and if he stumbles next year he's looking at a paycut not a raise.
If Jarmo was Laine's highest bidder the contract would be signed already.

Not specific to Laine, but as a player I would never agree on a 2 year deal in his shoes. There are no guarantees that he won't be shipped immediately to Arizona after signing the deal. Any NTC/NMC he signs will take place no sooner than a year from now and he could be Jeff Cartered to Arizona or any other undesirable location. Both Marian Hossa and Devin Setoguchi were traded within a week of signing their 3 year contracts and Carter as we all know was traded just before his NTC was about to kick in. Justa week ago Vanacek was traded a day before his wedding. Toronto bought out the last 4 years from Grabovski's contract a day before his wedding day. Only a fool of player trusts a GM to have his back.

One year deal would give Laine the leverage against Jarmo. Laine has already made it crystal clear that he wants to stay. For Columbus there's no risk except if Jarmo is not serious in his offer. Getting traded would not be the end of the world. He still gets to choose his next team. Maybe play in Florida with his best buddy Barkov, follow in the footsteps of Teemu and join the up and coming Ducks or choose the Hossa route and sign a 1 year deal with a real contender for a chance to win the cup. Or simply choose highest bidder (Kraken).

Laine is also not the type to worry about a paycut. He is too confident to worry about stumbling next year no matter where he ends up.

Yep, it was Barkov’s jersey since Columbus didn’t provide any for Laine. YOU CHEAP BASTARDS !! 😃
Laine said he is just waiting for his agent to fix a contract and call him.
Laine has also shaved his head and he has just started practising on ice this week.
