I'm probably a broken record but I'd love Kessel on this team. Comparing his last few years to Pacioretty's I'm not sure the gap between them is all that wide:

Kessel's shot has become an absolute muffin the past year or so. He's a very easy player to defend against (tougher than he looks, and difficult to strip the puck from, but easy nonetheless). For the same money I'd target ERod.

Kane might make sense at the deadline, now I just can’t see it. The cap gymnastics they’d have it pull off to fit him in now, even at 50%, combined with the related moves that would be necessary when Pacioretty is healed up make it pretty much impossible for them to field a full roster.

They’d have to send Gardiner and likely another roster piece on top of the necessary bounty of futures that CHI is sure to want.

As a tidbit, it looks like Kane’s actual salary this year is less than $3M after his bonus, so there’s that.

I may be setting myself up for disappointment, but I expect a big jump in production for Jarvis.

1) last year he was 2nd on the team in Goal/60 min at 5v5 (2nd to Nino)
2) last year he was 1st on the team in points/60 min at 5v5 (ahead of Aho)
3) He got limited PP time on the 2nd unit, but was the best producer (P/60) of the entire 2nd unit and even better than Trocheck on the 1st unit.

The "eye test" looks the part as well.

He's got a year under his belt, he's got confidence and he'll get much better opportunities for a full season, maybe even 1st PP unit.

My only concern is will the concussion he had impact his play. He's not a perimeter guy so hopefully the concussion doesn't make him too cautious.

I worry about the sophomore slump.

I worry about the sophomore slump.
Can't tell if you are serious or being sarcastic, but in case you are serious:

Until we have a more recent sophomore that slumps, I won't worry.

Rask: improved in his sophomore year
McGinn: improved in his sophomore year
Pesce: Improved in his sophomore year
Slavin: Improved in his sophomore year
Lindholm: Improved in his sophomore year
Aho: improved in his sophomore year
Svech: improved in his sophomore year
Necas: improved in his sophomore year
Foegele: improved in his sophomore year
Hanifin: improved in his sophomore year.

Heck, I'm sure I'm missing someone, but I can't remember the last sophomore slump we had. I guess it would be Skinner, but that was more due to the concussion because IIRC, he was on pace for a similar year point-wise before the concussion.

Then if/when Pacioretty comes back he either replaces Drury or fills in for another injury in the top 6.

I wouldn't mind Kessel, just because he seems like a fun guy to have on the team, if anything. Rod would probably have a brain aneurysm, given his training and diet regimen though. The man literally pounds soda on the bench.
I mean, Chara drank soda on the bench too, and he was a Rod level fitness guy. Plenty of sugar is good for intense activity, which is why Gatorade has so much of it.

Except the last 3 years, one guy paces for 30G & PPG, one guy paces for <15G and is slipping closer to .5 PPG with his dropoff. 8G puts him in Lorentz/Stepan territory (yes, I know ARZ sucked but still, his shot is gone and he had a team worst +/-)

Hell no on Kessel, and I love Kessel. Kessel and Rod make about as much sense as Torts and Laine did. Kane? Not as a rental. If he signed a two or three year with us that would be great. Stasnty was slow as a rookie, and as solid a player as he has been the thought of any mix of he/Staal/Koko at center when the league is getting ready faster by the minute is a poor choice imo.

Rodriguez is the stand out good fit but like I said yesterday I’m not sure he would like us unless he felt he could possibly end up with the 2C.

As for Jarvis expectations I don’t have any expectations other than I hope he can repeat his overall effectiveness. I make zero assumptions of increased offense. Planning around that is a mistake even if it’s likely. Be happy if he improves, he happy we have a solid young guy with plenty of time in front of him if he just stays the same.

I think the Kessel play style/training/attitude/etc. stuff is overblown when it comes to whether or not we'd ever acquire him. But as mentioned, the iron man thing would be a real concern. It was even rumored teams wouldn't pick him up at the deadline that were in contention because they didn't want to guarantee him every game.
