If you need mainstays on Canadian teams feel free add Byfuglien and Grant Fuhr to the sample size. Mike Grier and Anson Carter also played in Canada and not a soul hated them. Wayne Simmonds has also always been one of the most beloved players in the locker room and played two pretty big market teams.

If you're gonna say any animosity between Subban and his teammates (strong rumors about him having beef with Plekanec, Gallagher and Pacioretty in Montreal but no particular people in Nashville) has a racial component to it you might as well say Sean Avery getting run out of locker room after locker room had a racial component to it. Not that he's Sean Avery but could very well be Taylor Hall, ie some behind the scenes issues on his first team but not issues whatsoever once he gets to the Devils.
Byfuglien is a good example, I'll give you that, but he's also been shredded for his conditioning (not so much recently) and that year he appeared to be very out of shape leading up to training camp at the end of the summer. Which ended up being the lockout year anyway, so he had that many more months to get back down. He seemed to catch more flack at the beginning of the decade.

Fuhr's teams were (at least in his prime) successful and won a bunch of cups. By the time he was off those teams, he wasn't good anymore, but no one was gonna trash him after all those cups he won. Grier and Carter weren't nearly as good of forwards as Subban is a defenseman and Simmonds isn't either.

Anyway, I'm not even of the mind that most of Subban's reputation is based off his race.

And I don't doubt he had beef with those guys in Montreal. Hell, even Pacioretty got the locker room cancer rep there and they shipped him off just this last year. But that was all years ago and he's already been on another team between then.

They weren’t the team to sign Subban, given that the shed the Weber contract to get him it is pretty savvy by Nashville. They got rid of Weber’s massive contract to get 3 good years out Subban and now have the cap flexibility to add up front.
I have no idea why I thought Nash extended him post trade. Whoops

Greene may start out his partner, but I think they know that they shouldn't be relying on Greene to play 20 minutes or more anymore. Especially not in a year where he's 37 years old and in what will more than likely be his final NHL season. And if he's playing with Subban, he'll be playing over 20 minutes on most nights.

I think with the way he was used late in the year, Severson might be his partner. They loaded him up with the minutes late in the year and he did pretty well.

I'm sure after the first goal they're on the ice for, people will complain that we needed a ''Defensive defenseman'' or ''Defensive specialist'' instead of Subban.

The guy just turned 30 and you'd think he's eligible for social security the way some people talk about him.

He had a slight drop in a year where we was recovering from an injury. Clearly his career is over.
Plus his contract is definitely not going to be a problem. Nico might get 8, we have three years to hash out Hughes, Hall's money (should he sign) isn't going to kick in until 2021 and he's a free agent before we run into real problems.

I think P.K.'s personal marketing machine will grate a lot less in New Jersey than it did in Montreal. We have ownership and management that is clearly open to players have an individual media/social media presence. Hall's public persona isn't Subban's, but he's a pretty outspoken guy himself. Hughes definitely seems like he'll be of the mold. Plus it's just a young team in general and a lot of these younger NHLers seem much more open to this sort of thing. I really doubt it'll be a problem. He's going to be great from a fan engagement and marketing perspective- the guy is going to step out of the NHL and right into a TV job if that's what he wants.

We probably aren’t going to get that Subban, given his recent injuries. Probably will be a little less of a physical player.

He will be key to the PP as long as we don’t make the same mistake Nashville did and go and rely too much on his shot. With Hughes Hall and Palms up front I am less concerned about that.

Yea probably not, but he does have that element and can bring it when it matters, in the playoffs.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet. Subban is the one who laid that massive hit on Larsson. I think it was his rookie year too (larsson's rookie year).
Even as a Devils fan that hit and the aftermath cemented my position as a huge PK fan.

It was textbook, massive, and a thing of destructive beauty. Him staying on the ice and showing Larrsson respect once he was being helped off was a class move even though I was obviously upset about losing Adam at the time.

So glad this guy is finally here.

Ray kept his word, sign the contract Taylor.

Also...

Any attention (that's not negative) on NJ is good attention. PK is the type of player that demands eyeballs and he has a big name in the league. Mainstream media doesn't pay attention to us until we force them to by making the playoffs and going far. PK might actually get them to cover us a little more since he's such a polarizing figure.

There's no reason to break up Greene-Severson, they are great together.

So the other options are:

Mueller-Subban I don't think this is a good idea
Butcher-Subban This might be the best option we have at the moment
Smith-Subban I doubt they put a new guy coming off a down season with a rookie

I'd either go with Butcher, who IMO has earned more minutes. Or go out and get another guy. I'd roll with:

Butcher-Subban
Greene-Severson
Smith-Vatanen
*Mueller

The Devils just earned three more games on NBCSports

Now that the Devils have Subban and Smith, I would not rule out packaging Butcher to get a more defense-minded LD. How about Butcher and McLeod to Edmonton for Nurse, who looked amazing paired with Severson at the Worlds.

There's no way Butcher can handle top pairing minutes. Top lines will eat him alive.

I'm pretty sure you have to go with Smith (most likely imo as PK is an ideal mentor given his skillset) or Mueller the way the roster is currently constructed.

How much of his struggles can be attributed to his injury?
I believe a lot. He started looking a lot like subban at the end of the season. 9 points in the last 11 games. He lost some of his speed but I don't think subban has ever been fast. The system lavy runs probably made subban pinch more than he should of. You guys got a top defenseman and I believe hall will see the improvements and sign as well. I'm really hoping sheo offer sheets marner. You guys still have more than enough cap
