Honestly the biggest contribution PK will probably make is in our popularity, and that's a good thing. I absolutely love PKs personality. He is a breath of fresh air in a stuck up, no fun league. While I don't think he is really the kind of player we need, I'm really excited to watch him play and entertain the fan base.

That was very diplomatic ;)

Where are all the usual suspects who talk about "Cap space isn't an asset unless you use it"?

I wonder...
Well since it was used to acquire a good player in this case it was an asset. If it was never used, it wouldn’t be worth a damn.

I’m not sure why you think this transaction changes that reality.

In addition he brings some physical element to the team that is sorely needed especially on the blue line. This team gets pushed around too much and now with hischier and hughes and bratt etc. we need some big strong guys around them. i would not be surprised at all if the devils make a run at cory perry. he doesn't neccesarily fit the mold of a hynes player but he has size and grit.. that is another reason I say bastian is going to be given a real look to be a regular next season. we need guys like this to compliment our smallish team

That would mean one of Greene, Butcher or Smith sits.

From the looks of things I don't see how Mueller could possibly be anything more than the 7th man at this point?
I honestly think Butcher may be the odd man out. Trade bait perhaps?

PK and Sami have the point covered and Greene isn't sitting. Mueller's certainly not as sexy, but he balances out the pairings better. I imagine anywhere from a 50-50 to 70-30 split between the two in Kirk's favor.

I think there is good reason to excited for a player of his caliber joining the team. I understand what you are getting at, and I don't disagree. That said, there is going to be a lot to look forward to with this team this season and Subban is part of it.

How is Davies? What I've been reading on him was he would of got the chance to be on your nhl roster this year as a 3rd pairing. Could he be good enough to be on the preds 3rd pair

If you trade him for a real top six forward sure, why not...roll with Greene-Sevo, Smith/Mueller-Subban and Smith/Mueller-Vat. I do think Mueller fell out of favor with the staff by late last year so I'm not sure they'd make a trade and gift him a spot. Maybe him or Carrick?

There wouldn't have been enough spots for him on LD atm but he certainly could have pushed someone out in the near term one way or another.

He probably would have had a good chance to be a call up. He would clearly be behind Ty Smith going into camp but the left side is thin so there was good reason to think he would see some NHL time.

Also, side note, Jim brings up a good point. Someone has to kill penalties. I'd imagine we'd be looking for that in free agency.

It's funny to me how some Devils fans on the off-season boards were willing to give up more than what it took to get a Norris winner in PK Subban to get a mediocre 4/5 D. The Devils are going to be very strong moving forward -- adding an impact center and #1D. The Devils still have trade assets left over and enough cap room to add a top-6 winger. I think we're looking at a playoff team in 2020.
what about our coach and our "system"

Hm...Greene-Sevo and Vat would I guess be the three penalty kill defensemen atm. You could probably get by on that but any injuries and it would be tough.

A quick shout-out to @billingtons ghost and @longislanddevil and all the guys who backed me up when people on the Devils threads wanted to give up significantly more than it took to acquire PK Subban to trade for the #4D on the Minnesota Wild.

Still incredible that it happened this way.

And a big shout-out to you for providing so much info on the Draft picks and doing so much research.

I don't think many of us would've been quite as informed (yeah I can hear others snickering about me) without your input.

I was going to say:

Or Butcher goes to RD on the 3rd pair?

Mueller Subban
Smith Sev's
Greene Butcher

But then I remembered Vat's.

Carrick is still out there too.

Still hard to figure. Another trade maybe?

People keep saying this, but there's nothing to suggest top lines will eat Butcher alive.

That's not to say he can handle top pairing minutes, but the people who are skeptical that he can't have a tendency to overdramatize it just a bit.

He ate up lower lines in 17-18 and more than held his own against middle of the road competition in a more expanded role last year. The guy is starting to seriously become underrated around here.

I think that we should all be damn happy that we still have him (and Severson) after acquiring Subban today and being able to add Subban to them. And not losing one of them to get Subban.

Just so mind-blowing that this happened without us losing anyone important. :eek2:

His personality is a breath of fresh air. He'll be a fan favorite.

Anyone that rubs elbows with the Brahma Bull is okay in my book.

Thank you very much, kind sir!

I’m far from Nostradamus and surely can’t take credit but it sure is fun to play armchair GM!! It’s funny that I found text messages to my brother from 10 days ago in which I advocated for a Subban/Devils trade. I, like many other Devils fans such as yourself, felt this was a trade that made a lot of sense for both sides. With our profound need for a major upgrade on defense (to go along with Ty Smith’s impending arrival) coupled with Nashville having entirely way too much money invested in their D corps and Josi in line for a huge raise, it felt like the Devils and Preds were a natural fit for a deal here. I fully expect the Preds will reallocate the Subban $ for much needed scoring pop upfront (Duchene?). I do believe their unceremonious first round loss to Dallas was the wake up call and realization that they need some tweaking. You had declared Shero was waiting for the opportune time to weaponize that cap space and that he would pounce when the right opportunity presented itself. Ray himself said this and I’ve tried to politely remind our fellow Devils fans to be patient with this.

But I digress...considering Shero and Poile have a long history together and working relationship with other smaller scale deals previously consummated, it felt like something might be brewing.

I’m surprised many thought it would take a blue chip prospect like Ty Smith as the cornerstone of a deal to happen. This isn’t Ray’s first rodeo and he was never going to include Smith in any sort of package. Nashville never had a ton of leverage here for a massive haul if they expected teams to pick up 100% of Subban’s contract. There are only a handful of teams with that sort of cap flexibility which narrows down the trade market for the player quite substantially.

With the aforementioned paragraph said, did I think the Devils could acquire Subban for Davies, Santini and two second round picks? Somewhat close but not quite. I’m thrilled we did not have to include a Joey Anderson or a Miles Wood. While it would have been disappointing to see either go, I still would have been completely on-board. However, the notion that the Devils were ever going to need to include a Smith or Jesper Bratt to get Subban? It seemed a bit preposterous to me. Perhaps a lesser GM would have needed to...just look at Ray’s stellar trade history. This man deserves respect and is one of the best GMs in the NHL.

Let’s rejoice. It has been a transformative and historical 24+ hours for our beloved Devils franchise!!

Sorry but I was worried that Bratt may have had to been included....I'm grateful he wasn't and then some.
