Thankfully, Santini playing all those minutes in the first half of 17-18 and quite a bit at the end of 18-19 probably helped us in this trade. Poile saw he played decent minutes and was just a -10 (and a 0 even in 17-18) and not a -30 and was like ''He'll do!''.

There's no way Butcher can handle top pairing minutes. Top lines will eat him alive.

I'm pretty sure you have to go with Smith (most likely imo as PK is an ideal mentor given his skillset) or Mueller the way the roster is currently constructed.
People keep saying this, but there's nothing to suggest top lines will eat Butcher alive.

That's not to say he can handle top pairing minutes, but the people who are skeptical that he can't have a tendency to overdramatize it just a bit.

He ate up lower lines in 17-18 and more than held his own against middle of the road competition in a more expanded role last year. The guy is starting to seriously become underrated around here.

I think that we should all be damn happy that we still have him (and Severson) after acquiring Subban today and being able to add Subban to them. And not losing one of them to get Subban.

Just wanted to throw out there that we traded for a guy with a $9m cap hit...

Does anyone still believe that Harris/Blitzer don’t care and/or don’t wanna spend on this team?
They're probably gathering at either a Peter Zezel memorial event, an NJ Rockin Rollers reunion or a function for the Arizona Coyotes!:sarcasm:

When Meir is wearing Red and Black it won't matter if he can handle top pairing minutes. :sarcasm:

There's no reason to break up Greene-Severson, they are great together.

So the other options are:

Mueller-Subban I don't think this is a good idea
Butcher-Subban This might be the best option we have at the moment
Smith-Subban I doubt they put a new guy coming off a down season with a rookie

I'd either go with Butcher, who IMO has earned more minutes. Or go out and get another guy. I'd roll with:

Butcher-Subban
Greene-Severson
Smith-Vatanen
*Mueller

I imagine we have another trade coming involving a D. If we have any of Subban, Severson or Vatanen playing 3rd pairing minutes, it’s kindve a waste.

If we find a way to upgrade one Left pairing D and sign a top 6 RW, this team could do damage

A quick shout-out to @billingtons ghost and @longislanddevil and all the guys who backed me up when people on the Devils threads wanted to give up significantly more than it took to acquire PK Subban to trade for the #4D on the Minnesota Wild.
I'm glad we don't have to see Brodin's name floated around here ever again.

HOPEFULLY.

People keep saying it because everything suggests it.

Hence the 17-18 minutes per night on a putrid left side while getting significant pp time.

Smith needs a legit shot with PK. Think McAvoy/Chara this season

But in the minutes he has received, he’s dominated play....

I am very intrigued by a possible Mueller- Subban pairing. Reminds me of how Brendan Dillon became a pretty legit top pairing when he teamed up with Karlsson. Of course Dillon was an established D man already, but still. Maybe Smith too.

Greene may start out his partner, but I think they know that they shouldn't be relying on Greene to play 20 minutes or more anymore. Especially not in a year where he's 37 years old and in what will more than likely be his final NHL season. And if he's playing with Subban, he'll be playing over 20 minutes on most nights.

I think with the way he was used late in the year, Severson might be his partner. They loaded him up with the minutes late in the year and he did pretty well.

I'm sure after the first goal they're on the ice for, people will complain that we needed a ''Defensive defenseman'' or ''Defensive specialist'' instead of Subban.
They are both right handed and both need a more stable partner in my opinion. I don't think that pair would work.

There's lots of questions that we should ask ourselves after this deal. He got traded from Montreal because of problems in the locker room and his big head. There's some stuff that got out of Nashville too and rumors about a trade for a couple of years now... And now he get's traded again for not that much and Nashville were willing to retain 33% of his salary.... I'm sure he'll be good on the ice for NJ but I really hope he understands that maybe he's taking too much space.. And this is coming from a guy who loved Subban in Montreal but also saw a lot of things happening that were not so great.

Trade-wise though, it's a steal from NJ!!

honestly i think mueller is an injury fill-in at this point, nothing more. he’s not very good at anything, just painfully average

He's done well in his role(s), not doubt. And don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled we kept him as I would have assumed him or Vats would be going the other way in the PK trade. But I do believe we've pretty much seen his ceiling - a nice 4-6 Dman who can run the point and be effective against many teams bottom lines. At 24-25 that foot speed is not going to improve.

That would mean one of Greene, Butcher or Smith sits.

From the looks of things I don't see how Mueller could possibly be anything more than the 7th man at this point?

Judging by the trade board, Subban should fit in perfectly with Taylor Hall - party animal, Nico 'not a real first overall' Hischier, Jesper something, and Jack Hughes.
You forgot the no chance at a playoff spot, Zajac may as well be a 4th line center, and we need to sign a goaltender because McKenzie wha? Oh, and Schneider should retire.

They're a real hoot.
