It's funny to me how some Devils fans on the off-season boards were willing to give up more than what it took to get a Norris winner in PK Subban to get a mediocre 4/5 D. The Devils are going to be very strong moving forward -- adding an impact center and #1D. The Devils still have trade assets left over and enough cap room to add a top-6 winger. I think we're looking at a playoff team in 2020.

Exactly. I can't stop gushing over this trade. Subban is exactly what the devils needed. An offensive d-man WITH a bomb of a shot AND plays physical...and they got a player like that for nothing.

We probably aren’t going to get that Subban, given his recent injuries. Probably will be a little less of a physical player.

He will be key to the PP as long as we don’t make the same mistake Nashville did and go and rely too much on his shot. With Hughes Hall and Palms up front I am less concerned about that.

Easily explainable. These aren't great comparisons though.

First of all, outside of Iginla and maybe Seth Jones, none of these guys were anything close to a superstar. And outside of Iginla, no one was really a mainstay on a big market Canadian team. Jones has played in Nashville and Columbus. So he won't catch as much scrutiny as Montreal Subban did.

DSP had a short stint in Montreal, but if you remember, they ran him out of town too. The same city where PK was shipped out of just months later. Which as we've seen his career unfold since then, they absolutely made the right choice on that one. DSP sucks and wasn't even in the NHL for the entire season last year. He spent some time in the AHL after being waived and also was ''Out of shape'' during training camp. Another player that won't catch the scrutiny PK did. Probably because he's beyond irrelevant.

Joel Ward didn't even make the NHL in a full time role until he was almost 28 years old. Joel Ward was never nearly the player PK Subban is. He spent most of his career as a 3rd line winger. Once again, he won't catch the scrutiny.

Kevin Weekes didn't even make it until his 34th birthday in the NHL, yet he played for almost as many NHL teams as Jaromir Jagr played for and in a much shorter career. Weekes was the ultimate journeyman goaltender, if there ever was one. The definition of it. And even in his case, he was never NEARLY on Subban's level. The guy was a backup for most of his career. And outside of 2 years with the Rangers at the tail end of his career backing up a rookie/sophomore Henrik Lundqvist, he only played on a big market team early on, with his 31 games over 2 seasons with Vancouver where he was basically a rookie still. He was a starter for basically 2 seasons in Carolina and one season in Tampa, when they were one of the most irrelevant teams in the NHL and had only made the playoffs once in their franchise history by that point.

So of course PK Subban is gonna get scrutinized more than these other guys. I'm not of the belief that this was race influenced either (not for the most part), but because Subban was a superstar player, on a big market team, for a storied franchise that hadn't won a cup in over 20 years. Iginla is the only player on this list that was a superstar and played for a big market team. And a big market team that never won the cup (with him there), at that.

If you need mainstays on Canadian teams feel free add Byfuglien and Grant Fuhr to the sample size. Mike Grier and Anson Carter also played in Canada and not a soul hated them. Wayne Simmonds has also always been one of the most beloved players in the locker room and played two pretty big market teams.

If you're gonna say any animosity between Subban and his teammates (strong rumors about him having beef with Plekanec, Gallagher and Pacioretty in Montreal but no particular people in Nashville) has a racial component to it you might as well say Sean Avery getting run out of locker room after locker room had a racial component to it. Not that he's Sean Avery but could very well be Taylor Hall, ie some behind the scenes issues on his first team but not issues whatsoever once he gets to the Devils.

Seeing subbans twitter feed is exactly what this franchise needs. He brings that charisma and character that is going to make this team fun

How bad of a guy can he be when he donates $10 mil to charity. That is pretty darn generous and very classy thing to do.

As for the team, I’ll pray for a not injury plagued season like the last one. I still think Shero makes one more move.

None of those players are comparable to Subban and none of them were playing in the media cesspool that is Montreal.
