See what a decade of tanking get you. The oilers and sabres. Almost time for another decade of darkness in Edmonton.

See Colorado and LA. I wish this kind of straw man arguments would stop being posted. I can show you what a decade of being a bubble team gets you. See the Canadiens. I can do straw man arguments too.

Good management win and bad management lose. Good management wont lose assets for nothing when they don't win which usually result in drafting high. You can call that tanking or you can even call that whatever you want dunno let's call this sinking or exploding or whatever you want really it doesn't matter a bit,

LA

2003 draft 13rd overall
2004 : 11th
2005 : 11th
2006 : 11th, 17th
2007 : 4th
2008 : 2nd
2009 : 5th

Col

2009 draft 3rd overall
2010 : 17th
2011 : 2nd
2012 : traded their first
2013 : 1st overall
2014 : 23rd
2015 : 10th
2016 : 10th
2017 : 4th

Now i know someone will come here and say both LA and Colorado did not try to tank because they were trying to win and bla bla bla bla bla bla and in the case of Colorado it's true that they tried to win between Duchesne, ROR and McKinon but Duchene still helped them to get a 4th overall pick which helped the current core. And anyway the reasons why you suck don't matter at all if you suck you suck that's all. End result is the same you get high picks and you suck.

People think you can build a cup contender out of players who only know how to lose. That's what they want for us here in Montreal too. You need to know how to win sometimes.
Knowing how to win with Sergei Zholtok, Oleg Petrov and Danius Zubrus or even DD as your first line center is kind of pointless though. So if you can't get the high end skills via UFA or trades then there's just one other way to get it. UFA and trades failed for 30 years now. You know the definition of insanity ...

You can't win with those guys though. But at least right now we have 3 guys playing at a PPG pace and getting better each game. Plus tons of young guys with high upside. People still want to keep tanking for years though, even if Suzuki and Caufield's contracts don't fit into that kind of timeline.

I sincerely hope Edmonton pulls it together. If they don’t they could actually lose that franchise. Last thing I’d like to see is one less Canadian team.

They need help and a coaching change isn’t going to fix it.

They need to clean house. That's the only way to get players on board again. Their current management did not do anything great in the lass few years. That contract to Nurse is putrid. Giving that amount of money to Campbell was stupid. They really need a better management.

I guess. But there are a few problems here.

1. I get him signing Nurse. Nobody wants to live in Edmonton. What does it say if they just let their best blueliner walk? It’s a really tough situation.

2. Attracting talent is hard. Nevermind players… how are you going to get a strong GM to go there?

3. Now they’re in such a deep hole - and McDrai may leave. It’s just a brutal situation. What GM wants to walk into that?

Sometime you have to let good players walk. Good management do it all the time. In a cap era you have to manage the cap. The two important players are McDavid and Draislt. The rest is interchangeable. Pens support around Malkin, Crosby and Letang has been a revolving door or players. Also if Nurse is your best dman then your defense is pretty bad. He's not a number 1 in my book and should not be paid as such.

There’s a tremendous amount of luck in things working out in the NHL. I realize we desperately want to say that management determines everything but luck and circumstance are much more influential. Ken Holland won three cups in Detroit.

I probably would’ve let him walk too. But people who call him an idiot don’t appreciate Holland’s situation. They’re supposed to be going for it. How do you let your best blueliner walk?

And a lot of players want a premium to player there… it’s a tough situation.
