With McCarron back in the NHL with the Preds, I just have to wonder how great would it have been had He turned into a Tage Thompson for the Habs. Both are listed at 6-6 with McCarron being a little heavier 232 vs 220 lbs. Both are late 1st rounders 2013 25th overall vs 2016 26th overall.

Ahh but alas we never seem to have that luck in Montreal.

I'm sure Buffalo felt that way until Tage turned out.

May easily win the net and give the Sabres a fighting chance

Their fans have suffered long enough.

2010-2011 the last playoffs with a crappy team.... let's look at their draft history after that season.

2011:
16. Armia
No 2nd pick
No late hits

2012:
12. Grigorenko
14. Grigensens
44. McCabe
6h round Ullmark

2013:
8. Ristolainen
16. Zadorov
35. Compher
38. Hurley
52. Bailey
Late Petersen

2014:
2. Reinhart
31. Lemieux
44. Cornel
49. Karabacek
7th round Olofsson

2015
2. Eichel
51. B.Guhle
92. Borgen

2016
8. Nylander
33. Asplund
69. Pu
86. Fitzgerald
6th round Hagel

2017
8.Mittelstadt
37. Davidson
66. UPL
99. Bryson

2018.
1. Dahlin
32. Samuelsson

2019
7. Cozens
31. Johnson
67. Portillo

GM was fired after that. 2012 to 2014 drafts hurt them really bad. Could have walked out with Wilson, Vasilevsky, Horvat, Theodore and Draisaitl.

5 1st wasted in 3 years.

At his very best, he was closer to a jumbo sized Danault. He played arguably his best hockey during the memorial cup run in Oshawa in 2015 as a shutdown, faceoff specialist center. So of course, the first thing Sly did when he got his hands on him in St John was to try to turn him into a north-south power winger, with the expected results .

Please explain all our picks were late in that period except Chucky and Sergachev. KK only bust but not anymore according to HF experts TM.
They still got 2 high picks for Risto and Kulich and Levi for Reinhart so those picks were not totally wasted.

How do the Habs not draft him in 2020? Played at Carleton Place, which is in Timmins’ neck of the woods. He’s a local boy. Went in the 7th round. Stars seem aligned for him to be on their radar.

They didn't have a 7th round pick.. but yeah they could have taken him in round 6.

My guess? He didn't meet their internal threshold for goaltending prospects, which would be his height. I have not seen the scouting staff take a goalie 6'0 or lower since, Halak?

Wasn’t that the time they kept trading 7th rounders for a future 7th rounder? Felt like they made that move a yearly thing.

Jonathan Quick won 2 cups and was one of the best goalies of his era, all 6'1 of him. Isn't Saros like 5'11?
That goalie prospect for Calgary I think is 6'0.

Yeah they probably traded it to Philly lol

I'm not saying it is right, but it is clear they had a type for goalies and they even had a stretch where they were drafting massive goalies who sucked (Lacasse, Simila, Missiaen) because they were worried that nets were going to be bigger.

The thing about being sub 6'2" as a goalie, you need to be an explosive and elite skater, Saros is which is why he manages it. Quick obviously was an athletic freak prior to his injuries.

Wolf and Levi we will see.

It’s really the size thing. Smaller goalies need to have such crazy good technique to overcome it. He had a fantastic pre draft year…but he wasn’t worth more than that late round flyer at the time. His WJC performance and 2 NCAA years came after…where he showed off the technique to turn him as a prospect from “everything else has to be perfect because he’s small” to “he might make it”. But goalies are impossible to figure out. Even with his technique and the way he reads plays being at a high level where he’s been…he could easily get to the pros and get buried there. As can almost all goalies…pretty much at any time. His size is always going to be the big question. Shooters at this level find the smallest window.

on a side note, Leafs fan never cease to amaze me. They shit post in every single habs thread on the main board about habs season, and are amnesiacs about their playoff comedy over the last 17 years. Tonight, it's several bitch fest threads about refereeing in a game they actually won
LMAO

It felt like a league wide threshold for the longest time. Maybe there's a slight shift away from it recently, but I stilll don't see any mike Vernons or Mike Richters being considered for the nhl today.

I do remember the Habs drafting some Swedish goalie with that kind of size back in the 2000s. Heino-Lindberg or something.... Felt like an odd choice at the time even though it wasn't a high pick.

Only took 8 years to add someone legit like Ekholm to help him. Kane is real help too but the guy wasn't wanted by anyone and is a dick despite being a great hockey player.
Goaltending is going to be their Achilles heel. Their GM blew his load on another ineffective goalie.
