You’re dismissing the importance of a short in-season tournament because it’s a short in-season tournament (world juniors) but then you use another short in-season tournament (4 nations) as validation. Daft.

Well if they’re selected for 4 nations it reflects their standing as a player further along in their career. WJ is a reflection of their standing as a prospect. If a player has a bad 4 nations, it doesn’t mean they’re suddenly a bad player. Also, players at 4 nations are paid by their teams and some might not view it with the same significance. It’s not like an 82 game nhl season isn’t already grueling enough.

I've nothing against Laine, who clearly is a talented and potentially impactful player, but is it fair to say he's a bit like today's NBA stars -- i.e., entitled, and plays hard only when he feels like it?

Laine has clearly lost some of his passion for hockey, when his father died fairly early on his career at 23yo. Before that he had gaming addiction. If his father would be alive and he had passion for hockey, he would be top 20 player in the NHL no doubt. Crazy talented, but lacks the passion.

Well the CBJ brought him in to be the guy to turn it around. He was the one to get them out of the bottom of the barrel. So he was supposed to...I dunno try?

It is absolutely no coincidence that our team night and day turned around the second he was removed from it.

Just checking the stats. Since leaving Winnipeg, Laine has produced 109 ES points in 208 games. That's equivalent to about 43 ES points per season.

In that timeframe, the top guys are McDavid and MacKinnon, with over 82 per season, but of course that's exceptionally rare. Laine has been producing ES points at about the same rate as players like Ryan Hartman, Trevor Moore, Drake Batherson, or Cole Caulfield. So he's been doing okay at evens.

But what's interesting in that during his Winnipeg career, he was only pacing for... 44 ES points per season! (That is, 1 more ES point per year than after.) It would appear that the downgrade in his production is on the PP.

If he's on a team that gives him the right PP opportunity, he can be very effective. But maybe he's not the player who kind of creates those opportunities himself.

I'll be the first to admit I was wrong when I watched him in his rookie+sophomore seasons....I legit thought he would take a run at ovechkin for consistent 50+goal seasons....man what a take looking back

His shot is very Ovechkin like. I can see why people had that belief.

Unfortunately, his play is not.
