Considering that it was impossible to do typical fundraising activities during the pandemic lockdown period (which in Quebec lasted a very, very long time) — any look at his pledge should take into account that the recipient of the pledge (Children’s Hospital) likely would not permitted usual fundraising events to take place in its premises. By any account the pledge period should be extended.

Call it force majeur.

And this doesn’t take into account the obvious effect that being traded to Nashville would have on a fundraiser that is contingent on a local sportsman’s presence and celebrity.

If Habs media characters were civilized and independent thinkers they’d praise him for continuing his pledge despite being tossed to Nashville, and praise his commitment and offer to use their platform to support to push it over the line.
Honestly, 6.3M is pretty impressive considering all the factors you mentioned. What the article also overlooks is the fact Subban kept working towards his commitment and always made a point to visit the hospital whenever he was in town. Most traded players stop their engagement with the city when they leave.

Ultimately this is a desperate attempt to get attention and views by a newspaper company with a questionable track record on reporting content

Impressive but also questionable. PK just said it was 8-8.5 a few weeks back. He now says 6.3M but the publicly available numbers just don't add up.

It was a badly planned PR move from the start. He should have just said he was teaming up with the hospital and left the over-the-top nonsense out of it.

Every dollar raised for charity is commendable but trying to milk all the PR you can out of it is lame.

Regarding weber, given the information coming out about the closed off nature of the Bergevin regime, I wouldn't be surprised if Bergevin supported Weber's distancing, or even if he initiated it.

It was known that weber was in town a few times last year but not around the camera.

They change coaches every other year and somehow the ownership still thinks they're a playoff team.
Ownership is a big problem there. They never accepted a rebuild and seem to have a toxic work environment judging by all the turnover.

Weber probably never wanted to be here. Let's not forget that he did to his team as a young player. That kind of ego tends to carry over. But he played the proto-Hockey guy to perfection so was always seen as some kind of God. Good riddance.
This is just plain wrong.

Whatever perceptions we have of Shea Weber from our living room couches, he was named Captain of both franchises he played for. He wore the "A" on Team Canada's Olympic team. Quite obviously, his peers and management consider him an excellent leader.

No question, having him ghost the team last year wasn't a good look, but neither is ridiculous fan fiction. Let's keep our imaginations in check until we know the real story.

The weber bashing is just reactionary to the (weirdly timed) Subban bashing. I mean, if we really felt that strongly about players being around the team when they're injured, we would hear a lot more about Carey Price wearing cowboy hats in BC.

I don't think it's about him being around the team 24/7 or not, I mean, it's probably more about team captain Weber who ghosted the Montreal Canadiens while they were honoring Guy Lafleur.
