I am a Sens fan but that return is terrible. My dog could have got more than that for Ottawa. I am a Sens fan but this trade has me questioning a lot of things. Nothing vs. any of the players in return but together I'm not sure any of them are equal to Karlsson.

Duchene is as good as gone. No way he's happy with the return.
Stone, too? Might as well trade them before losing them for nothing...

I can usually summon a modicum of schadenfreude for other teams' fans, but this is just too brutal. I feel badly for Sens' fans.

If you're Dorion, how do you not get a 2019 1st? And don't tell me the Sharks didn't have one. I'd be telling Wilson "GO GET ONE THEN" instead of taking back Tierney and Demelo.

seriously, how did they not even get a first back this year....

According to the details of the trade. They only do if SJ misses the playoffs, otherwise it is 2020.

One more time.

Conditions of the trade as per NHL.com

The Senators acquired four players: centre Josh Norris (San Jose's 2017 19th overall draft choice), forward prospect Rudolfs Balcers, centre Chris Tierney and defenceman Dylan DeMelo.

The deal includes the following:
  • Ottawa receives San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.
  • Ottawa receives a second-round choice in the 2019 draft from San Jose (which will be the higher of the two picks the Sharks currently own, the Florida Panthers and their own);
The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.

Why? Were the Sens planning on competing for a cup in between now and 2020? Who cares what conference he goes to if it's as a rental, just get the best return possible. He's free to sign after an year with an Eastern team anyways.
Yeah, why handicap yourself like this? Insane.

I don't think it's that bad of a return given that you're just getting him for one year and the owner is crazy. If you're getting 3 or 4 NHL players cheap and under control for years, it's basically what Melnyk said he wanted in the video. Wilson is a wizard so maybe it won't hurt them but the Sharks don't have any cheap labor to draw from for years.

EK and a Cup for a bunch of slugs. The rest of the west should be embarrassed they couldn't do better.

I must underrated San Jose more than a lot of people, because even with this trade I don't see them being a top end favorite like the Metro Powerhouses/Tampa/Nash/WPG.

In the 5th-7th best ream range as of right now in my eyes. If you're Wilson, you obviously take the risk, but if he doesn't re-sign, this trade may hurt more than people think. Still, you have to take the shot.

For a rental, it isn't that horrible of a return but the scariest thing for Sens fans imo is...

1) They don't have their 1st
2) They don't have a 1st this year

I honestly think flipped Karlsson for their own 1st would have been a smarter move. At least sucking would pay off.

That east protection is the scariest thing to me, if I'm an Ottawa fan. I refuse to believe TB didn't offer at least one piece bigger than anything involved there. Even if it wasn't Sergachev.

Looks to me like they handcuffed themselves.

So it sounds like no team was willing to give up any sort of tier 1 or tier 2 prospects in the deals. Roster Filler, Draft Picks, and Tier 3-5 prospects.

wel yah. because it's camp. LOL
trading day deals last year was SO much better.

Do you realize that if there is an extension, they get a measly 2nd round pick in addition?

That could turn into a 1st to be fair ;).

But yeah.

Of course Dorion did a bad job. But this has been going on for months now. As Lavoie is reporting. EK was not willing to discuss an extension with anyone and that severely limited his value. Which explains the putrid return. Odds are the other offers were in the same ballpark. Its basically upper tier rental value. Maybe a tad more than what they could have gotten at next years deadline.

Dorion should have pulled the trigger at the deadline at the latest and now it has come back to haunt him.

Now EK had all the leverage and decided not to help Dorion and Melnyk out to get good value for him.
