I don't think it's that bad of a return given that you're just getting him for one year and the owner is crazy. If you're getting 3 or 4 NHL players cheap and under control for years, it's basically what Melnyk said he wanted in the video. Wilson is a wizard so maybe it won't hurt them but the Sharks don't have any cheap labor to draw from for years.

It's a terrible return for Ottawa. San Jose doesn't care about cheap and under control for years. They care about winning a Cup now. You can always find cheap bodies through FAs. Guys who are looking to rebound. Role players who get overlooked and catch fire in the playoffs. You can NOT say the same about a player of Erik Karlsson's calibre.

In retrospect, Sens would probably have been better to just tell him that if he won't agree to sign an extension and enhance his trade value, the Sens will hang onto him until the trade deadline and trade him to the highest bidder on his trade list. He would probably get just as many future assets at that point, anyway, and maybe more as their might have been a few more teams bidding.

That's exactly what they should have done.

Uh. First reaction: super, super disappointing return.

Tierney is a nice piece but ahouldn’t move the needle much in a trade like this. Demelo and Balcers are extremely meh. Norris is pretty meh, too; does he even have any significant top-6 upside? 1st and 2nd will likely be at the later ends of their respective rounds.

Those two conditional picks better be additional 1sts if he resigns, or this trade is just hilariously lopsided.

How does this blockbuster of a trade compare to the Bears trading for Khalil Mack from the Raiders? On a level of "equal to" or way bigger then, or not as big?

In terms of value, this is a bigger trade because the Sharks didn't have to give up anywhere near what people thought it would take. Bears had to give up 2 1sts AND sign Mack to a $20+ mill contract. But in terms of skill level of the 2, it is pretty equal. Though, I would give the nod to Karlsson.

According to the details of the trade. They only do if SJ misses the playoffs, otherwise it is 2020.

One more time.

Conditions of the trade as per NHL.com

The Senators acquired four players: centre Josh Norris (San Jose's 2017 19th overall draft choice), forward prospect Rudolfs Balcers, centre Chris Tierney and defenceman Dylan DeMelo.

The deal includes the following:
  • Ottawa receives San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.
  • Ottawa receives a second-round choice in the 2019 draft from San Jose (which will be the higher of the two picks the Sharks currently own, the Florida Panthers and their own);
The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.

The conditional picks are awful. The 2nd one is laughable!!!

Can the rest of the GMs in the league vote to veto this trade, like in a fantasy league? Because this wouldn't fly in fantasy.

How did no other offer beat this?

They didn’t want him in the east and he didn’t do a sign and trade. My guess is Karlsson is going to end up bolting next summer. San Jose’s window is closing fairly shortly

Not doriuns fault. Melnyk nixed the first two deals he had in place.

Melnyk deserves to be kicked out for this

Look at what we sent to the Rangers for McDonagh. Two good, safe NHL-level prospects in Howden and Hajek, a first, and a conditional second, plus a roster player.

THAT deal blows what the Sens just got out of the water for an inferior player. I refuse to believe we didn't have a better deal on the table for EK at the deadline than what we paid for McDonagh.

This is more value than McDonagh got. Not enough more, but it's definitely not worse. The difference between Norris/Balcers/De Melo and Hajek/Howden (if any) is more than made up for in the difference between Tierney @ Namestinikov, and the pretty huge fact their is a JT Miller coming with EK
