So this would have been like Bracco, Liljegren, Hyman and some picks if it had been the Leafs. Yikes.
Yeah, we lost the trade player-wise, BUT:
We save 2.5 mil in cap space, we get picks for the future and we get young players so yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa let's go Sennies!
So glad I didn't renew my season tickets LOL.
But seriously, this move is about our future 3-5 years out. I'm sure we'll be contending in 2022 or so. Maybe 2023 or 2024.

I think this goes to show how difficult it is to get the assets that fans expect when trading superstar players. The returns are usually disappointing. This trade seems to be a prime example of it.

The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.
Why would a conditional pick, based on reaching the Stanley Cup Final, need lottery protection? Doesn't that go without saying?

Really? NHL GMs make really, really stupid decisions when they’re desperate to get rid of someone (PK Subban) or to acquire a particular asset (Taylor Hall). This doesn’t surprise me, but as someone with no loyalty at all towards the Sens, it does infuriate me.

no there is stupid then there is whatever the hell this is

subban got a top pairing nhl dman
hall got a top 4 nhl ready dman at least
patches got a top 6 center prospect

what in the **** did ottawa get here

At least there are very few Sens fans left to be angry about this deal...All role players coming back at best...Even the late 1st they'll get has a higher probability of being middle-of-the-pack player than a game breaker

I'm not even a Sen's fan but I feel like flipping a table right now.

We traded Gretz
We traded Hall
We let Satan, Ray Whitney and countless others go for nothing.

I'm legit mad for hockey fans across the world because this trade is such utter, pathetic trash.

WHAT IF Tierney becomes a consistent 40-50 pt 2nd/3rd liner, Demelo is a decent 3rd pair guy, BOTH prospects make it (even bottom 6 roles) and the first rounder becomes something.

That's like 5 assets on your roster.

Does that make it more palatable?

Don't get me wrong, I think the deals awful, but if they end up with 5 NHL players in 2-3 yrs out of this that doesn't seem... bad?

Edit: Again, I want to reiterate, I think the deals awful! But just trying to put a positive spin on it for our fellow Sens brothers here.

Dorion’s 2nd condition is personal and not business. It shows He clearly is not in a logical state of mind to make trades. Wilson sweet talked him.

Anyone can tell me how any of the players received in return have any significant value? Are Balcers and Norris supposed to be really good prospects?
