Should SJS know they can't come to an agreement, they'll just flip him to another team at the deadline and cash out the return.
But I think Wilson might be able to sign him.

So Ottawa gets an extra first rounder if either Karlsson re-signs in San Jose or goes to a team in the East?

Knowing our luck he does neither and signs with Vegas or something.

Avs offer

JT Compher, Colin Wilson, Cameron Morrison and a second round pick for Stone, which becomes a 1st if Avs win the cup.

I see what you did there: slipping in a player that makes nearly $4 million this year like we wouldn't notice. You think this is the first dreadful trade we've made today?

Can you swap out Wilson for somebody that we've never heard of and makes less than $700,000? A player picked in the mid-to-late rounds several years ago and is exactly on the trajectory you would expect of a player that may be a fringe NHLer is preferred.

No one is really talking about this. But if The Sharks do not make the playoffs and do not re-sign Karlsson. This would be a big price to pay for a 1 year rental. An unprotected lottery pick in a Hughes draft, and there are plenty of good quality prospects this season. But I do admire Wilson for taking his shot. Top GM, but there is risk for SJ too.

I am not expecting this scenario either, but stranger things have happened in sports, on the rare shot Karlsson re-signs in Ottawa. Then the Sens can walk out big winners in this.

A lot of ground to cover until the final analysis is in.

no Meier, no Hertl, no 1st rounder in 2019 since Buffalo owns it

:biglaugh:

not to mention this trade ensures Duchene bolts. absolutely tragic for Sens fans.

Maybe the combination of EK's all star game act in Tampa, his public desire to play there and the botched trade with Tampa in July - this is Melnyk's way of telling Tampa and EK to eff off.

I guess I should not be surprised. That return is rank, but no guarantees (about resigning), no extension, so thems the breaks.

And the rich just got richer. Let’s see if they finally get over the hump. Damn. Time to win it all, San Jose. It’s really now or never. Don’t bs yourselves about windows of opportunity until EK signs an extension. For now, it’s 2019 or bust. (And I hope they do it!)

They won’t get much of a return. Rentals are worth nothing anymore in the NHL and MLB. I don’t think Karlsson signs there if his primary goal is winning a cup

This isn't me defending the deal because it's not a good return at all, but I think people are overrating how much 1 year of Karlsson should have actually brought back. Personally, I think it's crap because of the amount of quantity they got, but getting 2 Norris caliber prospects suddenly makes that less of a problem. They screwed up by trading him to San Jose, they don't have a strong prospect pool at all. They would have been better off talking to a team that had multiple Norris caliber prospects that they'd trade for Karlsson.

Inner conference deals usually do require a steeper return...It's fair to think that SJ would pay less than TB for a player who would have to be dealt in the same division...That being said this is a brutal return.

No way. Hall for Larsson is one of the most lopsided trades in all of history. Ottawa came out with way more.

If you like magic beans, we hit the jackpot. Otherwise, this is like the Spezza trade all over again with a much better player being traded away.
