Stunned by this deal. The Senators gave up some great picks, but they didn't have to touch any of their best prospects and are still poised to keep adding entry level contracts to their group for the next 5-6 years.

Bit a dice roll without an extension in place, but Debrincat is going to be playing with some talented players, and if the Sens are prepared to pay him what he wants, its a great place for him to be.

Suddenly the Senators are incredibly deep and dangerous up front.

Hyman was coming off 28pts

Debrincat is coming off 41 goals and 78pts
Brady is coming off 30 and 67pts
Stutzle is coming off 58pts
Norris is coming off 35 and 55 points
Batherson was almost a point per game
Formenton is coming off 18 goals and 32 points

How are these remotely comparable?

The Toronto team has the benefit of hindsight, and ended up blossoming in to a great group of players - but they were pretty much all magic beans at that time. The Ottawa group has a proven track record. Once again you missed the point and had to make it about Toronto again. At least the Oilers comparable made some sense from whoever posted it.

Nylander put up 80 points this year
Brown is a great middle 6 forward
Hyman has had 20+g each of the last 4 seasons

And none of those performances were unexpected.

Ottawa has established performance for sure, but they also:

-Didn’t have established vets to play behind
-Don’t have the upside of a Matthews or Marner

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very solid top 6 but it’s not the best in the salary cap era as you stated. And I do think they’ll need to move out at least one of those pieces to help out the back end (ironic, coming from a Leafs fan - I know)

Yeah. Makes sense. I see Debrincat is owed $9m this season and then will need a long-term deal, probably around $7m AAV. Got it. Seems like a win-win. Not to mention Ottawa should be pretty good this year, so it’s good for Debrincat too.
