Seems like a weird trade, you don't see players like Debrincat traded for a handful of picks and nothing else that often. It almost seems like an EA NHL trade you make on day one of GM mode :P The value isn't horrible, but that is a lot of future hope there. You would think they would want one definitive prospect/player coming the other way... Good trade for Ottawa.

I'm think Debrincat must have some unknown baggage. Like, everyone knows he wants to be a UFA ASAP and just get the biggest possible paycheck. Or he's an alcoholic. Or some deep character flaw...

I claim no inside knowledge. This just can't be the best offer unless the kid is "damaged goods" somehow.
Or he's coming back to Chicago when he goes UFA.

Yeah I think it ranks slightly ahead of Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, Anderson.

Were they all really that young? Damn... yeah that's not close.

Point stands though. Still an impressive group in the cap era. Especially since they are all proven to an extent.

Not sure what Chicago is doing here. Bizarre trade. He should have returned substantially more.

Mind you Joe Thornton was traded for spare parts players rather than picks but it feels a little like that TBH

Debrincat is a star

I'm convinced he had no intention of re-signing with the Hawks. They had to get what they could for him now. It's the only way this return makes sense.
The point of trading him now and not waiting is to he terrible to tank. This obsession with him signing isn't the point.

Some act like this team would be bad enough with him, it wouldn't. They still need work to do, yes they were awful and Fleury saved them last year... that was with JC/King and if you think they're so awful, obviously improvements will be made. So they have to actively try to be bad. You can't just let that pass in judgement

I wonder if young Debrincat will want to sign in Ottawa after his current deal expires? Or if the team stinks again and he's not having much fun, I wonder if he'll just take the QO and walk after one more year? Should be interesting.
