Difference is Soto is a McDavid level player, not a Tkachuk level. Acquiring a generational talent on a HoF trajectory at 23 years old is a ridiculous opportunity. Cards aren't winning anything with their pitching no matter how good the lineup is. There isn't enough pitching help available at the deadline to make them a true contender. Making a move for Soto is about the future. He's a cornerstone player. That's not what the Cards are going to do though. They'll deal mid level prospects for a guy like Montas, he'll be fine, they'll lose in the Wild Card game again, and we'll rinse and repeat next year just hoping that the prospects somehow turn this team into a contender before we have to pay them.
