We can make fun all we want against the Rangers, but they won the President trophy and have made the conference finals. This series isn’t over until you win 4 games. Rangers aside, what worries me is watching Florida, what chance would we have. They’re a tough physical heavy team, while we’re still a small although skilled team. However, come playoff time our guys would get crushed. They built this team on small fast skilled players, but no toughness or size. We have a ways to go before we can challenge, goaltending being a major issue as well.
The way I've seen them in recent years, the Rangers are built to thrive in the regular season: dominant goaltending and obscenely good special teams will help you rack up points, both because you're facing a lot of lesser competition but also because the really good teams won't get as much focused time to prepare for you. Get them in the playoffs, though, and they're more vulnerable; leaning so heavily on special teams and goaltending leads to them getting caved in on possession stats and whatnot. Doesn't mean they can't win it all, of course, their special teams and goaltending are
that good, but playing it so you keep getting outchanced by better than 2:1 and barely control the puck for huge stretches of time is a dangerous game.
I kind of equate it to a baseball team that thrives on hitting tons of home runs and walking a lot to generate most of their offense; that style absolutely can win you a title (see: the Atlanta Braves), but if you're too one-dimensional and get into the postseason against legitimately good teams, you're less likely to get a bunch of pitchers willing to throw meatballs your way or who can't get the ball in the strike zone, so suddenly a powerhouse lineup seems like they're striking out 12 times a game and end up bowing out.
All of that said, I fully agree that the current Devils facing the current Panthers in an extended series would scare the crap out of me.
