It'll be interesting to see the Reign tonight and compare them with last night's guests here in San Diego (we hosted Tucson in the season opener). Early weakness for the Gulls appears to be the PK (gave up all three goals in a 5-3 Gulls victory), so it'll be instructive to see how the Reign's PP stacks up. Sabourin was a scratch last night, but might be suited up against his old teammates tonight, and Schultz was playing for the Gulls last night, so it'll be several reunions. Bickel was much more controlled last night than Monday, so it'll be fun to see whether he lets loose again or not. I'm in LL1 row 8 if anyone is coming down and wants to say hi.

Cernak is quite a bit better than Lintuniemi. Unfortunately I do think they'll send Cernak back to the OHL. Cernak honestly should have been in AHL last year. He was better last year than a MacDermid for sure. Lintuniemi has two years left on his contract then it'll be off to Europe. He was a waste of a second rounder and I said it at the time. Oh well can't hit on them all.

Don't write off Lintuniemi quite just yet. The mayor reported about 2 weeks ago that the Kings were very impressed and pleased that Lintuniemi was the second biggest surprise after LaDue...or some such. I may be off in the quote, but he emphasized that the Kings' brass was impressed in the strides / effort / condition / play. So, let's wait and see.

I suspect they will miss Dowd quite a bit running the PP. Should be a good match up. A lot will depend on how Campbell looks compared to Budaj.

Campbell with Shut Out tonight with only 5 D (according to the box score). Anyone has any info why?.

LaDue was hurt in practice, but Stothers said it's not serious, not sure why Cernak didn't play. Bissonette played the entire game on D. He use to be a defenseman. He's actually played D a few times before for the Reign/Monarchs.

Campbell looked really good tonight. I liked Kempe game tonight as well. Hensick and Mersch were the goal scorers.

ty for the info. Im glad Kempe and Mersch had a good game. Those two are the most likely to be called up sometime this season.

He didn't have a goalie coach with the Stars?? That explains a lot about the Stars! lol. But it's gotta be weird having the goalies coach son as your backup. Not to mention the Kings head coach son is also on your team. We are all Kings indeed.

Campbell looked really good. I only saw him in preseason game vs Edmonton. He looked okay. Let in one weak goal. Although, EDM was playing nearly their full squad in that game, while the Kings had a split squad.

Hey... Campbell was the 11th overall pick is draft year. Who knows maybe Campbell is the goaltending factory story this year.

Campbell saved his best save for the end of the game. Beautiful glove save!

Campbell really did answer the bell on Saturday, for sure. Also, the Reign were really good at making sure that most of the shots he saw were of the low-percentage, less-threatening variety, and frustrating the Gulls' offense at the last moment.

As I predicted, the Gulls' weakness continued to be their PK, as both Reign goals were on the PP (in fact, the Gulls haven't given up a single goal this entire season that wasn't on the PK). The Reign PK, in contrast, was very effective. The Reign's forecheck was clearly something that gave the Gulls more problems than Tucson's play the night before.

MacDermid leads every check with a high elbow, and it's only a matter of time before he concusses someone off the ice, or breaks another jaw. He _will_ get suspended again this season, I guarantee it.

As per reign insider, it sounds worse than it is, but the stars have no full-time AHL goalie coach (have a guy rotating).

Stuff like that should make us appreciate our organization's backend.

Anybody know what the lines & defensive pairing are?

Thanks!!!

I keep this update'd not know about def pairing but pretty accurate and i have all player's that are with the team.

There were weird wingers last game like Auger on LW and Lowry as a RW, Bissonette played as a left defence and he is usually LW but has played defence before, not prop going to play as a defenceman anymore as we have Scuderi and maybe Leslie back and LeDue is going to be soon.

Forward lines are from last game.

Reign win a 6-5 overtime thriller against the Stars. Brodzinski with the overtime winner

They sounded (I listened online) sorta' sloppy on defense, but their tempo/quick breaks sounded good,
and they can actually score goals, which is refreshing.

Plus, most of their goals are comin from less-expected sources (Hensick, etc),
and the more-expected "big guys" are maybe only now starting to get going.

This may be a fairly-good offensive club when all is said and done.

It will interesting to see what the new guys bring. LoVerde had a good night. I didn't get to listen to the game. How did Campbell look? 5 goals? And now he's headed off to L.A. to back Budaj...

Ha, just read this tweet:

I got my e-ticket for this Saturday's game against SJ.

Can't wait.

Go Reign!!

Expecting a recap of tonight's game. Should be interesting.

As for last night's game:

Also, a story on Jonah and Dusty Imoo, by the Reign Insider (with a great video feature on the two, worth watching.)

No Kempe or Auger tonight. Not sure why. But more bodies might be going down with the injury bug

Reign looked rough defensively tonight, especially in the 1st 2 periods. They tightened-it-up
somewhat in the 3rd, but the SJ forecheck was pesky all night and
gave the Reign breakouts trouble frequently.

There were times when, like they often did last year, they formed
an inpenetrable wall and stopped the attacking play and turned it around quickly.
But this wasn't happening nearly as much as it needed to this game. Too many openings
SJ could take advantage of.

The team may be more talented offensively than last season, and they showed
a pretty resilient offense in this game, cashing-in on relatively few chances.

But the team still has some major polishing to do, in terms of breakouts,
team positioning and overall tempo especially.

A number of players made nice individual plays, but I didn't always get their number.

Bjorkstrand looks fast, smart and fairly skilled. He had 3 pts tonight,
but I wouldn't expect him to be a big scorer for the season---Just a solid 2-way guy
with very decent offensive stats.

Mersch showed his strength and made some nice plays, plus had a flub or 2,
though nothing fatal.

Amadio got lots of ice time tonight (with Kempe's absence), and was around
the play most of the time, but had no points and few good chances around the net (the team
didn't have many overall either).

Brodzinsky looked just ok, and didn't generate a whole lot offensively.
The lack of Kempe at C may have been a factor there.

Macdermid looked mean and persistent, but took his usual dumb penalty
at a key time.

The team looked energetic and feisty, but needs more precision and team-focus
to go with the hard work, IMO.
That should come with time.

SJ scored in the last 70-seconds or so of OT, after some near-misses by the Reign.

Saving best for last.

My favorite player tonight for the Reign was ...
Ta Da!!!

...
Kevin Gravel.
He didn't get any points or great chances, but his defense
was very good, IMO. He showed smart positioning,
appropriate strength & physicality, poise, nice puck-movement, good stickwork, and
seemed to get a lot of icetime tonight (20 minutes +?).
Gravel was his usual studly self, IMO.

Guys like Amadio, Auger, Mersch and Kempe have yet to get going offensively. If/when they do,
this team could score considerably more than last year's squad. It appears they have
more potential scoring depth. But we'll have to see how it works out.

IMO, Mike Stothers, given another 1-2 months with these guys, should be able to form
a pretty formidable team, IMO.
