Oilers waive Jack Campbell

Personal feelings about Campbell and his level of play vs Skinner aside, the Oilers were highly unlikely to be rescued from cap hell by another team claiming him. Moving significant cap space costs assets in the NHL and the prices have only inflated under the persistent flat cap environment.

It's not just the player, but his contract AAV and term that needs to considered. That's the primary advantage Skinner had over Campbell in avoiding the waiver wire

100% agree.

It's so noticeable on the back check. It's been like that for years.

Guys coast to the bench (Drai a HUGE offender)... those extra seconds may not matter to you when you are gassed, but they matter to the guy who needs to jump off and get into the play before he earns the -GA caused by your turnover and lazy change.

Guys coast back to their goalie... you may think that your ill advised pinch (Bouch!) is the end of it all and all hope is lost, but your goalie is hoping to bail you out. How is he meant to concentrate on making the first save, if he knows you've already given up that there will be a rebound requiring your help clearing?

This is what it means to play "as a F'n team" and these guys don't do it.

Not to sidebar this too much, but nobody suffers from poor team play more than the goalie, and I don't think anybody notices it/feels it more than goalies either. It makes a huge difference to a goalie's state of mind if the inner voice is saying 'that's it, nice back check, yes, keep the pressure, I've go you' rather than 'wtf are you stopping for, keep skating, ah geez, not again'.

I think that's why Smith was able to command better performances out of this squad. They are so starved for constructive tough-love and he was the only guy giving it.
All very good points.

All of these things and more add up to a major problem.

Coasting when they arent on offence.
That might well be the identity of this team.
That may be why when a player backchecks hard its praised so highly.
With a championship caliber team max effort on defence would be the standard.
Not with this team though.

Lastly...excellent point about how this affects the goalies and that Smith was able to command better performances.
Fast forward to today and the team has 2 introverted goalies and niether has the presence of a legit #1 goalie....no tough love for the skaters.

Now the forwards and Dmen have to hold themselves accountable (Woody sure doesnt appear like he can do it) and we can clearly see how effective that is.

The question becomes...how does this get turned around?

what do you think ED would have to add in a Campbell for
connor murphy trade? they save $600K in cap space and Murph has one less year. murph probably does not have a ton of value but its probably not a massive negative like Campbell.

If this management team thinks that they will entirely solve this problem by bringing oin another goalie then they are delusional.

This team is defensive garbage and until that is fixed the replacment goalie will be a short term fix at best.

Remember, goaltending coaches don't do anything

Both need to be improved. That is a statistical fact. Even the absolute shittiest team in the word kills our goalies HDS%

We are 20th in HDCA allowed with Sport Lgiq and top 5 in least allowed HDCA on NST

Even if the replacement goalie can just stop SOME of the high danger shots, that's a win. Our current ones can't stop anything it seems

This team is embarrassing defensively and that has to change. Just changing the goalie isnt enough.

I agree but its a 2 sided coin.
This team coasts way too much defensively and leaves the goalie flapping in the breeze.

No accountability at all on this team and regardless of who the goalie is that isnt sustainable at all.

Too bad the team couldn't wave both Jack and Stu. Both are trash.

I agree but its only a partial win because this team just doesnt seem to care enough to put in the effort required to play proper defence.
That has to change.

I think that we are seeing once again why this team burns through coaches. It will burn through goalies too if they cant prioritize defence.

Yeah...Skinner was never going to be claimed off of waivers.
It looks like Jackson has to try and fix Hollands mistake of signing Campbell in the first place

Its actually more than that...Jackson has to clean up a few Hollands mistakes and try and salvage the season too.

Skinner would've 100% been claimed, last year Calder finalist is young, and many teams know how porous Oiler's defense is, I doubt he would have made it past San Jose

Although the Pens don’t have any cap room so a contract would have to come back. Someone with a similar length contract & Campbell is so bad this year, Holland is going to have to add a sweetener.

Soup + 1st for Rakell or Rust
Soup + 1st + prospect (Broberg/Holloway) for
Reilly Smith (Smith’s contract is shorter, thus more desirable).
