My favorite part of this is that Carolina is currently lined up to play a Hughes-less New Jersey in the 1st round.

So if Colorado (or whoever faces them) is able to take down Dallas in round 1, there’s a solid chance that Carolina has more short-term success since the trade deadline.

Agree with this however I would argue , as I said before, that CMac didn't even want to convince him it was the last offer. They only wanted him to THINK the final offer was a strategy. They knew he would still refuse and come back with a counter-offer. The 11.75M offer was just to look like they wanted to re-sign him. I am convinced they didn't even want to sign him over 11M. There is a reason why they stopped at 11.75M. That number showed the world they wanted to re-sign him and was the perfect number to bait him in thinking it wasn't really their last offer. Then Boom! They use their refusal as an opportunity to do what they wanted to do in the first place: trade him to use the cap space to re-balance the roster. That is why Mikko was so surprised. He thought he still had until the TDL to negotiate. Necas' breakout was key to that new direction though.

That's my theory and I am sticking to it.

What I find really interesting is to wonder, how Mikko and his agent had reacted if they had known that Necas is on the table from the Canes. Because had they known that, I think they take it far more seriously that a trade is about to go down.

Honestly that's impressive Carolina was able to get that package if Rants was only willing to sign with 4 teams, and I imagine 3 of them didn't have space or assets for Rants.

Here’s the question no one has asked or answered. Had the Avs re-signed Mikko then does anyone truly believe he would have upped his play, effort and intensity? For $12M+ AAV the answer should be yes. He’s certainly capable of that as we have previously seen. But I don’t have any faith that he will and I’d be okay with circumstances eventually proving me wrong.

A second question. Do you think the team would be better with or without Mikko on it post-TDL?

I think everything worked out for the best.

It was going to be very difficult to build a team around Mikko’s $12M, with MacKinnon and soon Makar making big money.

And even for this season, there’s little to no drop-off with Necas. Let alone the extra cap/assets they’ve been able to use to bring in other players.

Necas probably won’t get quite the same amount of points as Mikko. But his speed and transition game helps in intimidating the opposition.

CMac has a reputation of being a straight shooter, no nonsense GM so the fact that the agent didnt suggest to Mikko to take the final offer is on him. Hopefully we dont have to play this game with Necas/his agent.
