All I can add to this thread is that the Oilers no longer need Lucic to protect McDavid. The refs seem to be doing a pretty good job on their own.

It is time that the Oilers move away from Lucic. He is not the old Lucic they wanted ..... he has slowed down. He still has upside but just Not a good fit with the Oilers.

Would rather use that $6 million salary else where.

So that being said ..... What team would take him?? And what could the Oilers get in return??
Are you guys retaining at least 50% because if not no team will go near him.

That old, slow, useless cap dump has 10 points, is + 2, and has 40 PIM in 14 games since Nov 1.

Extrapolated over 82 games, that's 59 points, + 12, and 234 PIM - or one of the best power forward seasons in recent memory.

Weirdly timed, OP. Weirdly. Timed.
Well unless your trading McDavid with him those stats are totally misleading..

Settle down everybody.

Edmonton will get rid of Lucic with on of their eventual free compliance buyouts that will come out of the next CBA.

At that point, we'll be free to sign any of those 1M/yr contract offers that you think he's actually worth.

No one is touching that albatross contract - he's big and burly, but in a few years that contract is going to look horrible when his body breaks down due to that truculence.

In "a few years", that contract is going to be damn near over.

Absolutely not. The cap space would be nice to play with over the summer, but Hagelin is useless. Lucic is making a bit too much money but still is a valuable player to have, on the ice and off. Plus Chiarelli loves the guy. He isn't getting dumped for crap, and we especially aren't paying up a pick to move him.

Still a good player but its not about what he's doing now, it's about a few years from now. The term will turn off every GM.

  1. I hope there are no compliance buyouts at all it rewards teams for incompetence and punishes those who build properly.
  2. Teams only learn by experience and by giving teams "free passes" it makes it harder for also-rans to ascend since teams on top never have to pay for their mistakes
  3. Edmonton was rewarded year after year with 1st overalls for their incompetence. It needs to stop. For their benefit as well as all teams. It's how incompetent executives keep their jobs.

Lucic contract down the road is going to be a burden, but it isn’t right now.

Guys like Lucic are best in playoff type games. I say type because for a lot of teams, the last 10 to 15 games of the season are playoff type games and can be just as ferocious as the post season games.

Insert joke about <Edmonton making the playoffs> here.

Edmonton is in a precarious position right now, but they could end up being a bubble team if McDavid recovers and the team pulls out of this tailspin.

A couple of years from now they can try and unload him or just buy him out. But he is a useful (and expensive) role player right now.

Five more years at $6 million? A NMC that he can name as few as 8 teams he'd accept trade to? Edmonton isn't shedding that without eating a lot.

Lucic has more points than:

Toews
Marleau
Thornton
Zetterberg
Pavelski
Duchene

While having a smaller cap hit than all of the above. For those of you who say "in a few years" he'll be bad. How do you know that?

Do you know how many players in the NHL have a 6 million cap hit or higher...85. Out of those 85, how many are not earning their cap number? I'd say 20-25 easy. How come there are no threads on these horrible contracts of players that make the same or more with much worse production.

Okposo 11pts
Staal 16pts
Plekanec 12 pts
Spezza 10 pts

Will Lucics contract be bad in a few years MAYBE?? but maybe not. The main question is has Lucic earned his contract last year and so far this year.....absolutely, no question he has. So why would we trade him???

Why don't you guys divorce your wife or breakup with your girlfriend because in a few years they might cheat on you. Make sure to let us know how that goes.

I think we're going to see buyouts not count against the cap in the next CBA. It works in favor of the players because they get paid either way while also increasing salaries since there won't be a penalty for a bad contract. The small market teams won't like this since it will help the large market teams. They could also limit buyouts to 1 a year per team without a penalty.

As for Lucic, I still think he has a good 4-5 years left in him of being a productive player.

Too high of a cap hit, too much term and the. Most of all there’s the McDavid factor that can cloud anyone’s analysis of him.

He’s an Oiler until his retirement
