Yes they did. I remember Lombardi about 4 years ago doing an interview right here in Edmonton about his philosophy on the rebuilding of a franchise. He had a whole shpeal and about the phases of it and what not.
I don't remember him saying that but if he did then mission accomplished. And in only three seasons too. Wow.

You mean like go fishing for Big name UFAs?
At some point that's going to become necessary, you understand that right?

Terrible game to watch today.
I'll give some props to MPS. His battle level is way up.

Well pens tanked for Mario so there out of any equation.

The stats i Posted were for LA......

Chicago was no better...

1997–98 1997–98 Did not qualify
1998–99 1998–99 Did not qualify
1999–2000 1999–2000 Did not qualify
2000–01 2000–01 Did not qualify
2001–02 2001–02 Lost in Conference Quarterfinals, 1–4 (Blues)
2002–03 2002–03 Did not qualify
2003–04 2003–04 Did not qualify
2004–05 2004–05 Season cancelled due to 2004–05 NHL Lockout
2005–06 2005–06 Did not qualify
2006–07 2006–07 Did not qualify
2007–08 2007–08 Did not qualify

So Chicago made the playoffs in year 6, and won the cup in year 7. Pittsburgh won their cup in year 7 and went to the cup finals the year before that.

Management needs to add balance to this team. We need more grit in the top-6. Guys who can go into dirty areas and dig pucks out. Guys who can make their living around the crease.

We need another quality puck mover. Our transition game is poor, and if we want to support our young forwards, we need to be able to transition between zones better.

I don't think the above is impossible to upgrade nor would it cost any of the big 5 to upgrade. We need better balance on this team if we want any hope to make the playoffs consistently.

I couldn't agree more. I have been pounding the 'balance' drum since Tambo arrived...its too bad that the only response from management has been the sound of crickets.

They made the playoffs in Toews 2nd season, Kane's rookie season.
This is Hall and Eberle's 3rd season, RNH's 2nd so how long should we wait?
When should we expect playoffs?

I don't buy the Chicago comparison. Toews was more dominant before he came to the NHL (see world juniors), had 35 goals in his 2nd season then made the Olympic team in his 3rd season.

Kane has been a PPG player since entering the league.

Kane+Toews>>Hall & Nuge at the end of the ELC's.

15 games into the season and we still aren't playing any sort of system. I don't know if the Oilers have ever looked so disorganized for such a long stretch before. Maybe under Quinn's system.

Spawn (in his answer) echoed my sense of what the reality of this team is.

I also explained what I think needs to happen to fix the issue...I am still waiting your response to that.

Actually Spawn didn't really.

But its ok.

Oilers tried for years to go fishing. It failed miserably.

Not many options really availible.

The year oilers decided to rebuild was the year they drafted Hall

They did win that Big, Shiny Trophy at the end of last season with the same exact roster. As Guymez said, it's a team built for the playoffs. Not the reuglar season, they are built for the playoffs.

Which means nothing if you don't even make the playoffs to begin with.

Just like Holmgren did with Richards and Carter? Oops.

Your aware both of those guys had off ice issues that led to them getting traded. Teams don't sign two of their marquee forwards to long term deals and trade them a couple of seasons in.

It's not like he was taking a random risk and did it for ***** and giggles.

I believe the Hawks won the cup when Kane and Toews were in their third year. The Oilers are not going to win the cup with Hall and Eberle in their third year - thats obvious - but it would be nice if they could at least COMPETE for a playoff spot.

The Hawks were bad before that for a long time and had a stable of prospects including a couple of very good defenseman. Not only that they added Hossa. Toews BTW would have been drafted 5 years since, Hall is only in his 3rd year. Patience. The Hawks also went from non playoff team to cup winning team very quickly, iirc they only made the playoffs once before their triumph. My prediction is the Oilers barely miss out this year, make it next season, and then legitimatly contend the next season. Not all rebuilds work the same, the Oilers came from a very different place when they started drafted in the lottery.

He said top tier. Not mediocre.

Doesn't matter whether they were elite or not. Green & Stoll plugged big holes for the Kings, and were big contributors in them winning the cup.

Gagne is proof that not all moves work out, but even he played roll in the playoffs last year.

You wont see that this year with the compressed schedule and the mandated days off. Pratice time is non existent this year

I knew one of you chaps would say that. ALL of those players save gagner were big parts of the cup winh last year. And that is kind of the point of it all isn't it? To acquire players to help you win the cup? Hell even the deal that everyone on hear yucked it up about and laughed at lobardi over in fraser helped them win the cup.

Our gm is a sheer joke compared to most gms in this league.

Well if Greene and Stoll were so great why did Oilers fans want them gone...

So the only options in your mind would be whale hunting or trying to draft an entire roster?

Yeah, this whole 5 year thing is a load of crap. They are in year 6 or 7 already. Gagner was a 6th overall pick, MPS was a 10th overall pick.

shhhh don't say that. The rebuild only counted when katz said it did aka the day we drafted Taylor Hall = rebuild start.
