Oilers are good at hockey again: Back in the plofs

Flames had terrible.advanced stats in 2015.

They scored 10 times with their goalie pulled in the last minute. It was crazy.
Oh was that the Flames who created the "pulling your goalie early is better" myth?

Fun fact: that actually never held up outside of one freak season. In every other year, it has no effect on probability of tying the game.

Well I am a sabres fan and reading your posts are killing what few brain cells I have left
I mean when a team that was a bottom feeder for a long time and had multiple 1st overall picks to our none and tries to laugh at us rebuilding its kind of a silly chirp. You are just mad because your team is more useless after all these top picks. I’m not even here chirping the oilers. It just happened to go that way. Just responding to different posters. I’m worried they might actually win the cup and was here preaching how silly people were going to look after the last Oilers thread ripping them saying they wouldn’t make playoffs.

meh...It's low hanging fruit, it's the easiest thing for people to target, even though the Taylor hall pick was 14 years ago The haters need something, especially a select fan base that believes McDavid was somehow "stolen" from them by the Oilers. and have been jealous ever since.

It's funny though, the Avalanche never got this kinda hate when the Nordiques had 3 consecutive first overall picks in 89,90,91.
Winning 5 years later solves that though. Everyone has to rebuild at some point. If you are lucky enough to get the picks that’s great. I wish the Ducks got those picks. If you continue to fail after getting the picks though you can’t be surprised by ridicule especially when every Oilers off-season thread after the picks was how good they were going to be. Started by Oilers fans or just a troll it’s still going to catch fire unfortunately.

What about the Jets?.....they are kinda leading the League lol...nice try though....

What about the Jets? *When/*if they make the playoffs, they only won 1 playoff round.... once! (since 2020)

Oilers have made the playoffs every season since 2020 and were in the conference finals just two years ago. (hello, you paying attention!?)

It's cute Jets have more regular season points while only being almost half way through the season (Oilers have played less games). It's nice Jets might make the playoffs again after WHIFFing in 2022 and a 1st round exit in 2023. Whooooooooopppppppppieeeeee

JETS: GrEateSt n Bestezzz CANADA tEaMMMMMmmmmzz Allll tImeZZZZ!!!! amirite?

Again, as stated, Oilers are the best Canadian team in the NHL.

Just passed LA in points percentage!

It'd be nice to get a bit of a cushion before the inevitable come back to earth.

Winning close games
Secondary scoring
D is killing it
Skinner is killing it

WTF is happening?lol
The amazing thing is Drai and McDavid have not been racking up the points over the last 5 games, which will inevitably happen, and the team is still winning. So as much as there are things going right, I would argue that not everything is… the two mentioned, Kane struggling as well.

Love the way the Oilers are playing. The way they are winning now is much different then in the past where McDavid and Draisaitl would score 2-3 points a game during the Oilers winning streaks and they would outscore their problems. They are playing as a team, a four line, 5 on 5 game, with good defense and goaltending and playing the right way all over the ice. They look like a real hockey team maybe for the first time in the McDavid era.

They’ve really looked fantastic

If they keep up their strong full team efforts I don’t see anyone beating them in the playoffs unless their goaltending absolutely shits the bed (likely)

As a Leaf fan (albeit one whose favourite player is McDavid), I am most impressed by the way the Oilers push the pace. For all the talk about being carried by McDavid and Draisaitl -- which is certainly true that they'll go as far as they do -- their transition and down low game is quite impressive. A guy like Ryan McLeod seems like one of those unsung hero types.

It would probably be possible to just math it out. Pulling the goalie is putting you at a disadvantage, because teams score into the empty net at a higher rate. But you want to increase scoring, because the current score would just lose you the game. So it's a tradeoff of increased time to tie the game up vs increased time for the opponent to score, which itself has a higher frequency than your team evening out the game.

Considering that, you should be able to plug in some numbers and take advantage of exponential distributions to figure out what the optimal time to pull the goalie is, precisely. At least using league averages.

It probably is tied to the ice time you can give your top offensive players. If you need to use your second unit, then it likely becomes far weaker to have the goalie pulled. 80-90 seconds is probably a good benchmark, since the first power play unit can usually stay out this long, too.

I love the smell of analytics correction in the morning.

They are back to where they should be in the standings. Probably a top 7-12 team at the end of the day.

Horrible luck to start the year, incredible luck now, but they have essentially evened each other out

However, they are still far from making real damage in the post season. They didnt really improve at all in the offseason, so theyll fair about as good in the PO this year as they have the last 2 years

Also, the takes on Skinner were outright embarrassing. Skinner is a very solid goalie and the losses were never on him. He is playing as good now as he was at the start of the season, it is just the Oilers are getting better bounces now.
